Chapter 14 Richard Holloway's Trap

The room fell silent.
Emily looked at Daniel as though she had misheard him.
"They claimed to be me?"
Daniel nodded.
"The bank manager became suspicious because the woman didn't have proper identification."
"What did she do?"
"She left before security arrived."
Marcus immediately grabbed his laptop.
"Can they review surveillance footage?"
"They're already pulling it," Daniel replied.
"We're meeting them there."
No one wasted another second.
Within twenty minutes, three unmarked police vehicles pulled into the underground garage of First National Bank.
The building had already been placed under quiet security.
Customers continued entering and leaving without realizing anything unusual was happening.
Daniel showed his badge to the manager.
A nervous man in his late fifties hurried toward them.
"You must be Ms. Carter."
Emily nodded.
"I'm Emily."
The manager looked relieved.
"Good."
"Because the woman who came earlier definitely wasn't."
He led them into a private conference room.
A security monitor displayed footage from the main lobby.
"There."
He pointed toward the screen.
Emily leaned forward.
A woman wearing a dark coat and sunglasses entered the bank shortly after noon.
Her hair was hidden beneath a knitted hat.
She confidently approached the reception desk.
Even without seeing her face clearly, Emily noticed something familiar.
The way she stood.
The way she held her purse.
The slight tilt of her head while listening.
Claire suddenly whispered,
"I know her."
Everyone looked at Claire.
She slowly covered her mouth.
"Oh my God."
Emily turned toward her.
"Who is it?"
Claire stared at the frozen image.
"That's Mom."
Emily felt her stomach tighten.
Daniel immediately zoomed in.
The security footage sharpened.
There was no longer any doubt.
Susan Carter.
Emily's mother.
She had tried to access Safety Deposit Box 417.
The same box Elizabeth Chambers had hidden for more than a decade.
Emily's father slowly sat down.
"I don't understand."
"I thought Elizabeth said your mother wasn't the mastermind."
Daniel nodded.
"She probably isn't."
"But someone clearly sent her."
The bank manager opened another folder.
"She completed this visitor request form."
He handed it to Daniel.
The handwriting matched Susan's signature from the financial records.
Under the reason for access she had written only three words.
Family authorization request.
Emily frowned.
"She knew the box existed."
Daniel looked thoughtful.
"Or someone told her today."
Marcus suddenly interrupted.
"Check the time."
The manager looked at the form.
"Twelve seventeen."
Marcus turned toward Daniel.
"We were still watching Elizabeth's video then."
Daniel immediately understood.
"So she couldn't have learned about the box from us."
Emily nodded.
"Someone else knew."
The manager spoke again.
"There's one more thing."
"When we refused her request..."
"...she made a phone call before leaving."
"Did you hear anything?"
"Only one sentence."
Everyone waited.
The manager repeated it exactly as he remembered.
He already knows the girl is coming.
Emily felt chills run down her spine.
"The girl."
She hadn't called me Emily.
She hadn't called me her daughter.
She had called me...
The girl.
Daniel immediately contacted the surveillance team.
"I want every camera around this building."
"If anyone is watching the bank..."
"...we'll find them."
Meanwhile, the manager led Emily into the underground vault.
Steel doors nearly a foot thick protected hundreds of safety deposit boxes.
He stopped in front of one.
"This box has not been opened in almost eleven years."
Emily looked at the small brass lock.
Elizabeth had trusted steel more than computers.
Now Emily understood why.
The manager inserted the bank's master key.
Emily inserted the silver key Elizabeth had shown in the video.
The lock clicked open.
Inside rested a single leather document case.
Nothing else.
Daniel carefully photographed everything before Emily lifted the case onto the inspection table.
She slowly opened it.
Inside were neatly organized folders tied together with blue ribbon.
Original construction contracts.
Cancelled inspection reports.
Bank transfer records.
Handwritten journals.
Every page carried original signatures.
Daniel smiled.
"This is enough to prosecute."
Marcus opened the final folder.
His smile disappeared.
"Emily."
She looked over.
"What?"
He turned the folder toward her.
Inside was a birth certificate.
It wasn't hers.
The name read...
Lily Grace Bennett.
Emily frowned.
"Lily?"
Her heart began racing.
She read the parents' names.
Mother.
Sarah Bennett.
Father.
Thomas Bennett Jr.
Emily slowly looked up.
"No..."
Claire stared at the document.
"Noah Bennett..."
Emily finished the sentence.
"...is Lily's little brother."
The room fell completely silent.
The same Bennett family that had secretly financed Richard Holloway.
The same family connected to decades of corruption.
The same family whose little boy Emily had just saved.
Daniel quickly searched the remaining documents.
Another sealed envelope fell onto the table.
Across the front, Elizabeth had written only one sentence.
Give this to Emily after she learns who Lily really was.
Emily carefully opened the envelope.
A handwritten letter slipped into her hands.
Dear Emily,
Lily never knew who her grandfather really was.
Neither did her parents.
Thomas Bennett built his fortune through corruption while pretending to be the city's greatest philanthropist.
When Lily died from an infection caused by one of Richard Holloway's fraudulent inspections, Thomas finally realized the system he financed had killed his own granddaughter.
He begged me to expose Richard.
But it was already too late.
His son refused to believe him.
His family turned against him.
Only one child remained innocent.
Noah.
Protect him.
He carries none of his family's sins.
Emily lowered the letter.
Tears filled her eyes.
The little girl whose death had inspired Guardian...
...had unknowingly belonged to the very family responsible for creating the corruption that took her life.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody could.
Daniel quietly closed the document case.
"We finally know why Harold Lawson risked everything."
Emily nodded.
"And why Elizabeth protected me."
Just then, alarms suddenly began echoing through the underground vault.
Red emergency lights flashed across the steel walls.
The bank manager looked confused.
"That's impossible."
"What is it?" Daniel asked.
"The vault only locks down under one condition."
"What condition?"
The manager swallowed hard.
"When someone tries to break in..."
He looked toward the massive steel entrance.
It was already sliding shut.
Then the security monitor inside the vault flickered to life.
A familiar face appeared on the screen.
Dr. Richard Holloway.
He smiled calmly into the camera.
"You've been chasing my past for days."
His smile widened.
May you like
"Now..."
"...let's see if you survive long enough to use it."
