Chapter 11 The Man Who Wanted Emily Hidden

The sound of the gunshot echoed across the frozen parking lot.
For one terrifying second, nobody moved.
Then Daniel shouted.
"Everyone down!"
Emily instinctively dropped to her knees behind the ambulance.
Marcus threw himself toward the portable hard drive as another shot shattered the windshield of a nearby Guardian truck.
Firefighters rushed civilians behind the engines while police officers searched the surrounding buildings.
Claire screamed.
"Michael!"
Michael pulled her behind a concrete barrier just as another bullet struck the pavement where they had been standing.
Emily looked toward Marcus.
"Are you hit?"
He looked down at his coat.
A deep scratch ran across his sleeve, but there was no blood.
"I'm okay."
The portable hard drive lay only a few feet away, half buried in fresh snow.
Daniel reached for his radio.
"Possible active shooter."
"Lock down the entire block."
"No one enters or leaves."
Within minutes, police cars surrounded the area.
Officers spread through nearby buildings while a helicopter circled overhead.
Emily carefully crawled toward Marcus.
"The drive."
"I know."
"It cannot stay out there."
Another officer slid beside them.
"I'll get it."
Emily grabbed his arm.
"No."
The officer looked confused.
"If Holloway sent someone..."
"They're expecting us to protect the drive."
"So?"
Emily stared at the snow.
"Then they're probably watching it."
Daniel immediately understood.
"It's bait."
He slowly nodded toward a parked fire engine.
"Use the thermal drone."
One of the firefighters quickly launched a small drone into the air.
Its infrared camera scanned the rooftops surrounding Guardian headquarters.
Less than thirty seconds later the operator froze.
"I've got movement."
Everyone crowded around the monitor.
A single figure lay hidden on top of an abandoned warehouse nearly three hundred yards away.
The rifle was still pointed toward Guardian headquarters.
Police units immediately surrounded the building.
Within minutes they stormed the roof.
The sniper never fired another shot.
Emily watched as officers led a man away in handcuffs.
His face remained calm.
Almost emotionless.
Daniel studied him from a distance.
"He doesn't look surprised."
"No."
Emily agreed.
"He expected to be caught."
Twenty minutes later the suspect sat inside a police vehicle.
Daniel returned carrying a folder.
"We identified him."
Emily looked up.
"Ethan Cross?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"This man's name is Victor Hale."
"He served in military intelligence before becoming a private security contractor."
Michael frowned.
"Does he work for Holloway?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Officially..."
"No."
"Unofficially..."
"He has protected Holloway at several public events."
Emily looked through the vehicle window.
Victor Hale sat quietly with his hands cuffed behind his back.
He never looked frightened.
He almost looked amused.
Daniel noticed the same thing.
"I don't like this."
Emily nodded.
"Neither do I."
"What are we missing?"
Before Daniel could answer, another investigator hurried toward them.
"Sir."
"What is it?"
"The suspect refuses to answer questions."
Daniel sighed.
"That's expected."
The investigator continued.
"But he keeps asking for Emily Carter."
Emily frowned.
"For me?"
Daniel looked uncertain.
"You don't have to."
Emily thought for only a second.
"I'll talk to him."
Inside the interrogation room, Victor Hale slowly lifted his head as Emily entered.
He smiled.
"I was wondering when we'd meet."
Emily remained standing.
"You tried to kill us."
Victor shrugged.
"I missed."
"You fired directly at the evidence."
"I fired at the hard drive."
His honesty was unsettling.
Emily folded her arms.
"Who hired you?"
Victor laughed quietly.
"You already know."
"I want to hear you say it."
"I'm afraid I can't."
Emily studied him carefully.
People like Victor rarely wasted words.
Every sentence had a purpose.
"You don't seem worried."
"I'm not."
"You've been arrested."
"I know."
"And yet you're smiling."
Victor leaned back.
"Because this investigation is much bigger than you think."
Emily stayed silent.
He continued.
"You believe Richard Holloway is the man pulling the strings."
"Isn't he?"
Victor smiled again.
"He believes that too."
Emily felt a chill run through her body.
"What does that mean?"
"It means powerful men often mistake themselves for kings."
"And?"
"They usually discover someone else owns the throne."
Emily stared at him.
"What are you talking about?"
Victor looked directly into her eyes.
"You've spent the last two days chasing the wrong monster."
Emily's heartbeat quickened.
"Who is the right one?"
Victor remained silent for several seconds.
Then he asked a question instead.
"Have you ever wondered why your mother hated your work so much?"
Emily frowned.
"She thought it was beneath me."
"No."
Victor shook his head.
"That wasn't the reason."
"Then what was?"
"She wasn't trying to embarrass you."
Emily almost laughed.
"She humiliated me for ten years."
"Exactly."
Victor's smile disappeared.
"Because every time someone heard your name..."
"...they associated you with toilets."
"Never hospitals."
"Never infection prevention."
"Never contracts."
Emily slowly stopped breathing.
Victor leaned closer.
"Someone wanted you to remain invisible."
Daniel, watching through the observation window, immediately stepped inside.
"That's enough."
Victor looked at him calmly.
"No."
"It isn't."
He turned back toward Emily.
"Your company started exposing financial fraud without realizing it."
"If people had known who you really were..."
"...you would have been killed years ago."
The room fell completely silent.
Daniel stared at Victor.
"You expect us to believe someone protected Emily by destroying her reputation?"
Victor smiled one final time.
"I didn't say protected."
"I said hidden."
Emily's mind raced.
None of it made sense.
Unless...
Someone had intentionally allowed her mother to keep belittling her.
Someone powerful enough to watch her career for years.
Someone who wanted Guardian to keep growing unnoticed.
Daniel suddenly received a text message.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed instantly.
"What happened?" Emily asked.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
"The forensic team finished examining Harold Lawson's journals."
"And?"
"They found one recurring entry."
"What does it say?"
Daniel swallowed.
"Harold met secretly with someone once every month."
Emily waited.
"The journals never mention the person's name."
"Only two initials."
"What initials?"
Daniel looked directly at her.
"E."
"C."
Emily froze.
Those were her initials.
But she had never met Harold Lawson in secret.
Not once.
Then Daniel quietly added the final detail.
"The meetings began..."
"...six months before Guardian Environmental Services was even founded."
The room fell into stunned silence.
Someone had been using the initials E.C. years before Emily ever built her company.
May you like
And somehow...
That mysterious person had remained hidden for more than a decade.
