Chapter 13 The Bank Vault

Nobody in the room breathed.

Elizabeth Chambers looked directly into the camera with calm, steady eyes. Her hair was completely gray, but there was nothing weak about her expression.

She knew exactly why she had made the recording.

She also knew Emily would eventually see it.

"If you are watching this," Elizabeth began, "it means Richard Holloway has finally gone too far."

The room remained silent.

"I wanted to tell you this in person."

"But I no longer believe I'll have that chance."

Emily felt her chest tighten.

She remembered the gentle woman in the hospital library.

The woman who always carried two books.

One for herself.

One for Emily.

Elizabeth smiled softly through the screen.

"Emily, the day you walked into the library carrying Lily's photograph, I recognized something I had not seen in decades."

"You were angry."

"But not because life had been unfair."

"You were angry because a child died from something preventable."

Emily slowly lowered her eyes.

That had been true.

She had never been angry at cancer.

She had been angry that a simple infection had stolen the little girl who trusted her.

Elizabeth continued.

"Most people cry."

"Some people complain."

"A very small number decide to change the world."

"You belonged to the last group."

Claire quietly wiped away another tear.

Elizabeth reached for an old notebook lying beside her.

"You often wondered why I insisted that Guardian remain small during the beginning."

"The answer was simple."

"You were being watched."

Daniel immediately leaned forward.

"Watched by who?"

Although Elizabeth could not hear him, the next sentence answered his question.

"Richard Holloway never feared honest people."

"He feared competent people."

"He monitored every company capable of exposing his fraud."

"If Guardian had grown too quickly, he would have destroyed it before it survived its first year."

Marcus slowly nodded.

"So she kept Emily invisible."

Natalie whispered,

"Long enough to become too important to eliminate."

Elizabeth looked directly into the camera again.

"I made one terrible mistake."

"I believed I could expose Richard through legal channels."

"I underestimated how deeply corruption had spread."

She opened another folder.

Inside were photographs.

Hospital executives.

Politicians.

Business leaders.

Several faces had already appeared during Daniel's investigation.

Then Elizabeth held up one final photograph.

The room froze.

Emily's father suddenly stood.

"No..."

His voice trembled.

"That can't be."

The photograph showed Richard Holloway shaking hands with another man.

A smiling man.

Wearing an expensive gray suit.

Emily recognized him instantly.

He had attended nearly every Thanksgiving dinner for the past fifteen years.

He was one of her father's oldest friends.

Thomas Bennett.

Noah Bennett's grandfather.

Emily stared at the screen.

"The little boy..."

Natalie looked horrified.

"Noah's grandfather?"

Elizabeth continued speaking.

"Thomas Bennett financed Richard's operation for almost twenty years."

"He never appeared on company records."

"He never signed contracts."

"He remained invisible."

Emily's father slowly sat back down.

"I played golf with him every Saturday."

Daniel looked at him.

"Did he ever mention hospital business?"

Her father nodded weakly.

"All the time."

"I thought he was proud of supporting children's hospitals."

Elizabeth's voice interrupted his thoughts.

"Thomas's greatest talent was convincing good people that he was generous."

"In reality..."

"...he invested in failure."

"The more hospitals delayed repairs..."

"...the more money he earned."

Marcus clenched his fists.

"So children became part of a business model."

Nobody answered.

Nobody needed to.

Elizabeth closed the folder.

"If you have reached this point in the investigation..."

"...then there is only one thing left to find."

She reached into her pocket and removed a silver key.

Emily immediately recognized it.

It looked almost identical to the broken locket Grandma Eleanor had protected years earlier.

Elizabeth held it toward the camera.

"This key opens Safety Deposit Box 417 at First National Bank."

Daniel quickly wrote the information down.

Elizabeth smiled gently.

"I never trusted computers."

"Paper burns."

"Servers fail."

"But truth hidden in steel survives."

Emily's heartbeat quickened.

"What is inside?"

Almost as if Elizabeth had heard the question, she answered.

"Inside the box are the original contracts."

"The original payments."

"The original signatures."

"And one recording."

"The recording Richard Holloway fears more than anything else."

Daniel looked stunned.

"A recording?"

Elizabeth nodded.

"It proves who ordered hospitals to ignore dangerous repairs."

"It also proves who received the money."

Michael looked toward Emily.

"If that's true..."

"...this case is over."

Elizabeth's expression suddenly became serious.

"Listen carefully."

"Do not go to the bank alone."

"Richard has people watching the box."

"They don't know what is inside."

"But they know it exists."

Emily felt a chill run through her body.

Elizabeth took one final breath.

"If I could leave you only one lesson..."

"...it would be this."

"Never confuse dignity with silence."

"You remained silent because you believed your work spoke for itself."

"Sometimes that is enough."

"But sometimes..."

"...good people must speak before evil writes the story for them."

Elizabeth smiled one last time.

"I am proud of you, Emily."

"You kept your promise to Lily."

"You saved more children than either of us will ever know."

The screen faded to black.

Nobody moved.

Several moments passed before Daniel finally spoke.

"We leave for the bank immediately."

Emily nodded.

"No delays."

Marcus disconnected the hard drive.

Claire looked at Emily.

"What if we're too late?"

Emily thought about Lily.

About Noah.

About every child whose life depended on people telling the truth.

Then she answered quietly.

"We're not too late."

"As long as the truth still exists."

Just as everyone prepared to leave, Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed almost instantly.

"What happened?" Emily asked.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

"The manager of First National Bank just called."

Emily's stomach tightened.

"What did he say?"

Daniel looked directly at her.

"Someone came asking for Safety Deposit Box 417..."

May you like

"...exactly ten minutes ago."

"And they claimed to be you."
