Chapter 5 - The Wedding Guests Learned the Truth

At some point, secrecy became impossible.
Two hundred guests could not sit inside a chapel forever.
I asked the priest to announce that the ceremony was canceled.
He looked shocked but did not argue.
Then I did something I had never expected to do on my wedding day.
I walked into the chapel holding Emily’s hand.
Rebecca remained behind.
Everyone stood automatically.
My mother looked confused.
Michael stood near the aisle.
Allison waited beside him.
I reached the front.
“There will not be a wedding today.”
Gasps moved through the room.
My mother stood.
“Daniel?”
“I’m sorry.”
I said.
“But something happened before the ceremony that I cannot ignore.”
I did not tell them everything.
Emily did not need two hundred strangers hearing details about her fear.
I simply said.
“Plans were made concerning my daughter without my knowledge or consent.”
“And documents appear to have been signed in my name.”
The chapel went silent.
Then Linda stormed through the side door.
“This is a private family misunderstanding.”
Allison stepped forward.
“No.”
She said calmly.
“It may also be a legal issue.”
Rebecca appeared behind her mother.
Still wearing the wedding gown.
She looked at the guests.
Then she looked at me.
“You are humiliating me.”
I nearly laughed.
Ten minutes earlier, my daughter believed her father had agreed to send her away forever.
And Rebecca thought humiliation was wearing a wedding dress during a canceled ceremony.
“You did this.”
I said.
Her face twisted.
“I did everything for us.”
“No.”
“You did everything around me.”
The difference mattered.
Then Rebecca’s father stood from the third row.
Charles Whitmore.
A wealthy investment manager.
A man I had always found polished and distant.
“Daniel.”
He said.
“Perhaps you should reconsider making accusations before you understand the entire arrangement.”
I looked at him.
“What arrangement?”
Rebecca turned toward him sharply.
“Dad.”
Charles ignored her.
“The school.”
“The trust.”
“The residency structure.”
“All of it was meant to create a stable marriage.”
My blood ran cold.
He knew.
“How much of this did you arrange?”
Charles smiled faintly.
May you like
“More than Rebecca did.”
That was when I understood the woman I nearly married might not be the only person trying to reorganize my family.
