Chapter 14 - Charles Offered Me a Deal

Charles requested a private settlement.

Allison laughed when she received the letter.

Then she read the number.

Twenty million dollars.

In exchange, I would agree not to pursue civil claims related to the attempted business restructuring.

I would also sign a confidentiality agreement.

Rebecca’s conduct involving Emily would remain outside public filings where legally possible.

I stared at the offer.

“Twenty million.”

Michael said.

“He’s scared.”

Allison agreed.

“Very.”

I asked one question.

“What happens to the investigation?”

“This cannot stop criminal or regulatory investigations.”

“But he wants me quiet.”

“Yes.”

Twenty million dollars was a massive number.

But money was exactly how Charles understood people.

He believed everything had a price because almost everything in his life did.

I rejected it.

His attorney increased the offer.

Twenty-five million.

I rejected that too.

Then thirty.

I still said no.

Michael looked at me.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

“I’m not telling you to take it.”

“I know.”

“But thirty million is real money.”

“So is my daughter.”

That ended the conversation.

I filed a civil action instead.

Not because I needed compensation.

Because discovery would force documents into daylight.

Charles tried to seal everything.

Some records remained protected due to Emily’s age.

But enough became public to damage the Whitmore family’s reputation.

Investors began asking questions.

Two board members resigned.

The proposed merger disappeared.

Hawthorne Ridge updated its intake safeguards.

Dr. Monroe’s licensing case moved forward.

And Rebecca disappeared from social media entirely.

Then she sent me one handwritten letter.

I almost threw it away.

Instead, I read it.

Daniel,

I know you believe I wanted Emily gone because I hated her.

I didn’t.

That may make what I did worse.

I convinced myself temporary separation would give us a chance to become a real couple before she could pull you backward.

I saw your love for Sarah everywhere.

In Emily’s face.

In the lake house.

In photographs.

In the way you still said “we” sometimes when talking about the past.

I thought if I could create enough distance, eventually there would be room for me.

I know now that love does not work that way.

Rebecca.

I folded the letter.

She finally understood one thing.

May you like

There had always been room for her.

She destroyed it by trying to remove someone else.
