Chapter 19 - Emily Walked Back Into the Chapel

Two years after the canceled wedding, Michael’s daughter got married.
At the same chapel.
When I saw the invitation, my first instinct was to decline.
Emily surprised me.
“I want to go.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
So we went.
The chapel looked exactly the same.
White doors.
Stone steps.
Garden behind the building.
The place where I found Emily crying still existed.
I noticed her looking toward it.
“You okay?”
She nodded.
Then she took my hand.
We walked behind the chapel together.
The tree was still there.
Emily stood beneath it.
“I was really scared here.”
“I know.”
“I thought you were going to be mad.”
“I’m sorry you ever thought that.”
She looked up.
“You listened though.”
“Yes.”
“That’s why I’m not scared now.”
The simplicity of that statement nearly broke me.
We returned inside.
Music started.
My niece walked down the aisle.
No drama.
No hidden documents.
No children being moved around like assets.
Just two people making promises they had actually discussed.
During the vows, Emily leaned over.
“If you get married, don’t invite two hundred people.”
I whispered.
“Why?”
“Too expensive.”
I laughed quietly.
Sarah would have loved that.
At the reception, Emily danced until midnight.
I watched her from across the room.
Nine years old now.
Confident.
Loud.
Completely different from the trembling child behind the chapel.
Then Michael joined me.
“You ever think about how close you came?”
“Every day.”
“One note.”
I nodded.
“One note.”
He looked toward Emily.
“She saved herself.”
“No.”
I said.
“She trusted me enough to ask if I had betrayed her.”
That was the part I never forgot.
Children rarely have power over adult plans.
Sometimes all they have is a question.

Did you agree, Daddy?
The rest depends on whether the adult is willing to hear it.
