Chapter 18 - What Sarah Had Written

While organizing documents at the lake house, I found an old envelope inside Sarah’s desk.
My name was on it.
Daniel.
The handwriting stopped me.
Sarah.
I sat down before opening it.
The letter was dated four months before she died.
She must have hidden it intentionally.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, life probably became something neither of us wanted.
I know you.
You will try to become both parents.
Don’t.
You cannot replace me.
You do not need to.
Just be her dad.
Someday, I hope you love someone again.
Do not feel guilty.
Emily will need to see that grief is not the end of love.
But promise me one thing.
Never choose someone who sees Emily as evidence of a life they have to defeat.
She is not my shadow.
She is her own person.
Whoever loves you must understand that.
Sarah.
I could not breathe.
I read the final paragraph again.
Never choose someone who sees Emily as evidence of a life they have to defeat.
Sarah had described Rebecca years before I met her.
Not because she knew Rebecca.
Because she knew people.
She knew grief could make future love complicated.
I cried until Emily found me.
She sat beside me.
“What is it?”
“A letter from Mom.”
“Can I read it?”
I gave it to her.
She read slowly.
Then she smiled.
“She said I’m not her shadow.”
“Yes.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means you get to become yourself.”
Emily thought about it.
“Good.”
Then she pointed at another sentence.
“She wanted you to love someone.”
I laughed through tears.
“I noticed.”
“So you have to.”
“That isn’t exactly what she meant.”
Emily shrugged.
“I think it is.”
For the first time, the idea of loving again did not feel like betrayal.
It felt possible.
Not soon.
But someday.
May you like
And if someday came, I knew the first question I would ask would not be whether someone loved me.
It would be whether their love had room for the people I already belonged to.
