Chapter 7 – The Woman Who Refused to Lie

Celeste sat alone in her luxury apartment, staring at the city skyline she had once believed she owned.

Her phone had not stopped ringing.

Reporters.

Former friends.

Brand managers.

Lawyers.

She ignored them all.

Then another call appeared.

Damien Rhodes.

She answered after the third ring.

"You told me everything would be handled," she said before he could speak.

"It can be."

His voice was calm, almost detached.

"But only if you remember exactly what happened."

Celeste frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

"You'll tell investigators Emma became dizzy, stumbled on her own, and that the video creates a misleading perspective."

She remained silent.

"You understand?"

"I didn't expect the cameras to catch—"

Damien cut her off.

"They didn't catch anything. People see what they're told to see."

His confidence sounded forced.

For the first time, Celeste realized he wasn't trying to save them.

He was trying to save himself.

"And if I refuse?" she asked quietly.

Damien didn't hesitate.

"My attorneys will make sure you're remembered as the woman who manipulated a married man, staged a public spectacle, and assaulted a pregnant woman."

The line went silent.

Then he added one final sentence.

"You'll lose everything."

He hung up.

Across town, Detective Sarah Mitchell reviewed the hotel footage frame by frame.

The evidence was compelling, but she needed more than a viral video.

She needed witnesses.

Her phone buzzed.

The caller identified herself.

"My name is Linda Morales."

The detective straightened.

"I worked hotel security the night of the gala."

"I'm listening."

"I have something investigators should hear."

That afternoon, Emma watched rain clouds drift past her hospital window.

She was stronger now.

The medications had eased the pain, and Noah's heartbeat remained steady.

A soft knock came at the door.

Detective Mitchell entered.

"Mrs. Rhodes, how are you feeling?"

"I've been better."

The detective smiled sympathetically.

"I won't keep you long."

She placed a recorder on the bedside table.

"I need your statement."

Emma closed her eyes for a moment before speaking.

She described the months of emotional abuse.

The public humiliation.

The affair.

The gala.

The fall.

She never exaggerated.

She simply told the truth.

When she finished, Detective Mitchell switched off the recorder.

"There's one more thing."

"What is it?"

"We've located another witness."

Emma looked surprised.

"Who?"

"The hotel security supervisor."

"The woman who saved the footage?"

The detective nodded.

"She says someone approached her after the incident."

Emma's pulse quickened.

"Who?"

Detective Mitchell opened a folder.

"One of Damien Rhodes' attorneys."

"He offered her two million dollars."

Emma stared in disbelief.

"For what?"

The detective met her eyes.

"To say the surveillance system malfunctioned."

A heavy silence filled the room.

Then Detective Mitchell smiled faintly.

"The problem for him..."

She slid a signed affidavit across the bed.

"...is that she refused."

Outside, cameras gathered on the hospital lawn as breaking news alerts lit up phones across the country.

For the first time since the gala, the public conversation changed.
