Chapter 1 – The Night Everything Broke

At 10:58 p.m., the ballroom of the Ashford Grand Hotel glittered beneath crystal chandeliers worth more than most people earned in a lifetime.
Every camera in Manhattan was pointed toward one man.
Damien Rhodes.
Founder of Rhodes Global Holdings.
America's youngest billionaire under forty.
Standing beside him was not his wife.
It was Celeste Monroe—the social media star whose face had become impossible to escape over the previous six months.
Their laughter echoed through the ballroom while reporters captured every smile.
No one noticed the pregnant woman standing outside the entrance.
Emma Rhodes rested one trembling hand beneath her swollen belly.
Thirty-two weeks pregnant.
Exhausted.
Her doctor had begged her to stay home after warning that her blood pressure was dangerously unstable.
But tonight was Damien's annual charity gala.
The invitation still carried her name.
Mrs. Emma Rhodes.
She believed there was still a chance to save her marriage.
She was wrong.
The hostess glanced at the guest list before looking up awkwardly.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Rhodes..."
Emma forced a weak smile.
"Yes?"
"Mr. Rhodes instructed us not to admit anyone whose name wasn't personally approved tonight."
Emma frowned.
"I am his wife."
The hostess lowered her voice.
"I know."
Before she could answer, Celeste noticed Emma through the glass entrance.
She whispered something into Damien's ear.
He turned.
For only a second.
No surprise crossed his face.
Only annoyance.
He walked toward the entrance with the slow confidence of someone who believed the building belonged to him.
Because, in many ways, it did.
"What are you doing here?" he asked.
Emma searched his eyes for the man she had married five years earlier.
She couldn't find him.
"I came to talk."
"We already talked."
"No, Damien. You talked."
His jaw tightened.
"You should be resting."
"You stopped answering my calls."
"I've been busy."
Emma laughed quietly.
"Busy replacing me?"
Celeste approached before Damien could answer.
She slipped her arm naturally around his.
Almost possessively.
"Oh," Celeste said with an innocent smile. "I didn't realize she was actually coming."
Emma looked at Damien.
"You brought her."
"It's a public event."
"You introduced her as your partner."
Damien exhaled impatiently.
"You've become obsessed."
"I became your wife."
Guests nearby had begun pretending not to watch.
Phones slowly lifted.
Recording.
Emma felt the familiar tightening beneath her ribs.
The baby shifted.
Hard.
She inhaled sharply.
Damien noticed.
For an instant, concern flickered across his face.
Then disappeared.
"I don't have time for another scene."
"I'm carrying your son."
He looked toward the cameras behind her.
Then back into her eyes.
His voice became cold enough to freeze the rain falling outside.
"You've been using that child to manipulate me for months."
Emma stared at him.
The sentence landed harder than any slap.
Behind them, thunder rolled across the New York skyline.
She suddenly realized something terrifying.
Her marriage hadn't been falling apart.
May you like
It had already ended.
She had simply been the last person to know.
