Chapter 4 – The Woman With the Flash Drive

At 2:13 a.m., Ethan sat alone in the hospital cafeteria, his untouched coffee growing cold.
His phone vibrated again.
Meet me. Parking Garage Level B3. Fifteen minutes. Come alone.
No signature.
No explanation.
Ethan glanced toward Emma's room through the glass corridor. A police officer now stood outside her door, assigned after the attending physician documented signs of possible domestic violence.
Good.
She would be protected.
For now.
The underground parking garage was nearly empty.
Rainwater dripped from concrete beams as Ethan stepped out of the elevator.
A woman in a gray maintenance uniform emerged from behind a support column.
She looked to be in her early fifties, her hands trembling as she clutched a small black flash drive.
"My name is Linda Morales," she said quietly. "I've worked security at the Ashford Grand for nineteen years."
"You sent the message?"
She nodded.
"I copied the footage before Mr. Rhodes' legal team arrived."
Ethan's expression remained unreadable.
"Why risk your job?"
Linda swallowed hard.
"Because I had a daughter."
The words hung in the air.
"She stayed with a man who kept apologizing after every time he hurt her."
Her voice cracked.
"One night, he apologized too late."
Silence settled between them.
"I couldn't save my daughter," Linda whispered. "Maybe I can help save your sister."
She placed the flash drive into Ethan's hand.
"It contains every camera angle from the hotel entrance."
Ethan looked down at the tiny device.
"So Damien doesn't know this exists?"
"He believes every recording was deleted."
"What about backups?"
Linda gave a faint smile.
"Most billionaires understand money."
She looked him directly in the eye.
"They rarely understand technology."
Back inside his SUV, Ethan inserted the flash drive into his encrypted laptop.
The first video appeared.
Crystal-clear.
Timestamped.
Unedited.
He watched Damien order security to remove Emma.
He watched Celeste mock her.
Then another camera angle loaded.
One hidden behind a decorative pillar.
Ethan leaned closer.
The footage revealed something the livestream had missed.
Just before Emma lost her balance, Celeste had quietly extended one foot behind her.
Emma's heel caught it.
The stumble wasn't an accident.
It had been engineered.
Ethan replayed the clip three more times.
There was no doubt.
His phone immediately rang.
Caller ID:
Detective Sarah Mitchell – NYPD Special Victims Unit
He answered.
"This is Ethan Bennett."
Her voice was steady.
"Mr. Bennett... we've reviewed the viral footage."
Ethan looked once more at the screen.
"You haven't seen the important part yet."
He pressed Send.
The security video uploaded directly to the detective's secure server.
