Chapter 5 – The Price of Betrayal

The silence that followed the final video was suffocating.

Every face in the ballroom reflected the same emotion.

Shock.

Not because Ethan could walk.

But because the people they had admired moments earlier had exposed themselves with their own words.

Isabella's hands trembled uncontrollably.

She looked from one guest to another, desperately searching for a friendly face.

There wasn't one.

The socialites who had surrounded her throughout the afternoon quietly stepped away, unwilling to be associated with scandal.

Victor loosened his tie.

"This proves nothing," he said, forcing confidence into his voice. "Private conversations aren't crimes."

Ethan nodded.

"You're right."

Victor exhaled in relief.

"For ordinary conversations."

The doors at the back of the ballroom opened.

Three men and a woman entered, dressed in dark business suits.

Leading them was Margaret Ellis, the chief legal counsel for Blackwood Capital.

She carried a leather briefcase thick with documents.

"Good afternoon," she said calmly.

"I'm afraid this is no longer a private matter."

She placed several folders on the table.

"Mr. Victor Langford, during the last four months you created shell companies to secretly purchase shares of Blackwood Capital."

Victor's face stiffened.

Margaret continued.

"You bribed two board members to leak confidential information."

Another folder landed on the table.

"You instructed brokers to spread false rumors about Mr. Blackwood's health in an attempt to manipulate the company's stock price."

The room erupted in whispers.

Insider trading.

Market manipulation.

Corporate fraud.

These weren't embarrassing accusations.

They were serious crimes.

Victor forced a laugh.

"You can't prove any of that."

Margaret smiled politely.

"Actually..."

She opened another file.

"We already have your emails."

His smile disappeared.

"And your encrypted messages."

His breathing quickened.

"And recordings of every meeting held in your office."

Victor slowly turned toward Isabella.

"You said no one knew."

Her eyes widened.

"I... I thought..."

"You thought wrong," Ethan answered.

He stepped closer, his voice calm but unwavering.

"The moment confidential information left my office, every document was digitally traced."

Victor's forehead glistened with sweat.

"You set us up."

"No."

Ethan shook his head.

"I gave you a choice."

"You made every decision yourself."

Across the room, two elderly board members lowered their heads in shame.

Ethan looked at them.

"You believed rumors instead of asking me the truth."

One of them stood.

"We failed you."

"You failed the company."

The man nodded silently.

"I resign."

The second director followed.

"So do I."

Their resignations stunned everyone.

Within seconds, the balance of power inside Blackwood Capital shifted completely.

Victor realized it before anyone spoke.

Without those directors...

His voting alliance had collapsed.

Months of planning vanished in an instant.

His phone vibrated.

Then again.

Then again.

He glanced at the screen.

His largest investor had withdrawn funding.

Another message.

Three banks had frozen ongoing negotiations.

Another.

His company's stock was falling rapidly as news from the ballroom spread online.

His hands began to shake.

"No..."

Across the room, Isabella reached for his arm.

"We'll fix this."

Victor yanked it away.

"You!"

His voice echoed through the ballroom.

"You told me Ethan was finished!"

"You said the company was ours!"

She stared at him, stunned.

"You promised me!"

"You promised yourself," he snapped.

For the first time, their perfect partnership cracked in front of everyone.

The greed that had united them now turned them against each other.

Ethan watched without satisfaction.

Only certainty.

He had spent months pretending to lose everything.

Today, he discovered something far more valuable than money.

Loyalty could never be bought.

And betrayal always came with a price.

As security quietly entered the ballroom and approached Victor, Ethan spoke one final sentence.

"The game ended the moment you believed I had stopped playing."

Victor looked up just as two investigators stepped in front of him.

May you like

"Mr. Langford," one of them said.

"We have a warrant for your arrest."
