Chapter 4 – The Empire Strikes Back

For several endless seconds, no one spoke.
The ballroom, once filled with laughter and clinking crystal glasses, fell into complete silence.
Every eye was fixed on Ethan Blackwood.
Standing.
Walking.
Perfectly steady.
A champagne flute slipped from someone's hand and shattered against the marble floor.
The sound broke the spell.
"My God..." an elderly investor whispered.
"He's walking."
Across the room, Isabella's face turned ghostly pale.
She instinctively took a step backward.
"N-No..."
Victor stared at Ethan as if he had seen a ghost.
"That's impossible."
Ethan continued walking until he reached the center of the ballroom.
His movements were natural now—confident, controlled, effortless.
Months of relentless rehabilitation had erased the weakness, but not the memory of every painful step it had taken to get there.
He looked around the room.
"I owe all of you an apology."
The guests exchanged confused glances.
"I invited you here under false pretenses."
A murmur spread through the crowd.
"The accident was real."
"The paralysis was real."
"But my recovery..." He paused. "My recovery happened three weeks ago."
Gasps echoed throughout the ballroom.
Isabella shook her head violently.
"You're lying."
Amusement flickered across Ethan's face.
"Am I?"
He nodded toward the entrance.
Dr. Adrian Wells entered carrying a thick medical file.
Behind him came two renowned neurologists from different hospitals, followed by Ethan's physical therapist.
One by one, they placed signed medical reports on the table before the guests.
"The diagnosis was verified independently," Dr. Wells announced.
"Mr. Blackwood has fully regained the ability to walk."
The room erupted with whispers.
Isabella's breathing became shallow.
"But... but I saw the reports!"
"You did," Ethan replied calmly.
"The reports you stole."
Her heart seemed to stop.
"You knew?"
"I knew the moment someone broke into my private office."
Victor suddenly interrupted.
"Even if that's true, what does it matter?"
He forced a laugh.
"So you can walk again. Congratulations."
"It doesn't change the fact that your company is collapsing."
Several investors nodded uncertainly.
Victor sensed an opportunity.
"You've already lost control of Blackwood Capital."
Ethan smiled.
"Have I?"
He snapped his fingers once.
The massive LED screen behind the stage came to life.
Instead of the evening's celebration slideshow, a security video appeared.
The first clip showed Isabella secretly entering Ethan's office after midnight.
The second showed her photographing confidential medical documents.
The third revealed Victor waiting outside before the two left together.
The ballroom fell silent again.
Then another video played.
Victor meeting privately with two board members.
Discussing stock manipulation.
Insider trading.
Plans to force Ethan out while believing he was permanently disabled.
Their voices were perfectly clear.
Victor's confidence evaporated.
"Turn that off!"
"No," Ethan said quietly.
"I think everyone should see the rest."
A final recording appeared.
It was from less than an hour earlier.
The terrace.
Isabella calling Ethan "worthless."
Victor admitting their affair had lasted four months.
Both confessing they had conspired to seize his company.
Every cruel word echoed through the ballroom.
When the recording ended, no one applauded.
No one moved.
The guests who had admired Isabella only minutes earlier now looked at her with open disgust.
She reached for Victor's hand.
He pulled away.
For the first time since they met...
May you like
they realized they were no longer standing beside a defeated billionaire.
They were standing in front of the man they had tried—and failed—to destroy.
