Chapter 2 – A Lie Worth Millions

The silence after Isabella's declaration felt heavier than thunder.
No one moved.
No one applauded her boldness.
Instead, dozens of wealthy guests avoided Ethan Blackwood's eyes, ashamed that they had remained spectators while his fiancée publicly dismantled his dignity.
Isabella mistook their silence for agreement.
She folded her arms and smiled triumphantly.
"You all know I'm right," she said. "Business is business. Marriage is an investment. Why would I tie my future to a man who'll never walk again?"
A few people nodded awkwardly, unwilling to challenge her.
Others quietly stepped back, sensing something wasn't right.
Ethan remained perfectly still.
"Martha," he said gently.
The elderly housekeeper looked up through tear-filled eyes.
"Would you help me retrieve the ring?"
She carefully picked the diamond from the blanket and placed it into his palm.
"I'm sorry this happened, sir."
"You have nothing to apologize for."
His calmness only irritated Isabella further.
"Stop acting noble," she snapped. "It's pathetic."
She walked toward the long banquet table where champagne sparkled beneath crystal chandeliers.
Grabbing a microphone, she tapped it twice.
"Ladies and gentlemen," she announced with theatrical confidence, "I'd like to make something perfectly clear."
Every conversation stopped.
She smiled like a woman delivering good news.
"I am officially ending my engagement to Ethan Blackwood."
Several cameras immediately lifted.
Socialites instinctively reached for their phones.
Within seconds, photos began appearing online.
Billionaire Abandoned After Tragic Accident.
Fiancée Walks Away from Disabled CEO.
Exactly the headlines Isabella wanted.
She believed public sympathy would be brief.
Money always attracted new attention.
Especially when another billionaire had already started courting her.
Victor Langford.
Young.
Healthy.
Aggressive.
Everything Ethan supposedly no longer was.
Victor stepped forward from the crowd wearing a tailored navy suit.
He slipped an arm around Isabella's waist without hesitation.
"I told you," Victor said loudly enough for everyone to hear. "You deserve someone who can actually stand beside you."
Laughter echoed from a few opportunistic guests eager to impress Victor.
Martha clenched her fists.
For the first time in thirty years of service, she wanted to scream.
Instead, Ethan quietly asked,
"Victor... how long has this been going on?"
Victor didn't even pretend to feel guilty.
"About four months."
Another ripple of whispers spread through the crowd.
Four months.
Meaning the affair had begun while Ethan was still fighting through painful rehabilitation.
Isabella rolled her eyes.
"Oh, spare us the heartbreak. It's not like you could satisfy anyone anymore."
Several women in the audience visibly flinched.
The cruelty had crossed every line.
Yet Ethan simply nodded.
"As honest as ever."
Victor smirked.
"What are you going to do about it?"
Nothing.
That single word seemed written across Ethan's face.
Exactly what Victor expected.
He leaned down beside the wheelchair.
"You've already lost your company."
"I bought twenty-one percent of Blackwood Capital last month."
"Soon your own board will remove you."
Isabella smiled proudly.
"We planned everything."
Martha looked horrified.
They hadn't just betrayed Ethan emotionally.
They had been quietly dismantling his empire while pretending to support him.
Victor straightened his jacket.
"It's over."
He extended his hand toward Isabella.
"Come on."
She happily accepted.
Together they turned toward the mansion's entrance.
Just before disappearing inside, Isabella glanced over her shoulder one last time.
"I almost feel sorry for you."
Ethan watched them leave without saying a word.
Only after the doors closed did Dr. Adrian Wells step beside the wheelchair.
"They've confessed to everything," the doctor murmured.
Ethan looked toward the dozens of hidden security cameras surrounding the estate.
"I know."
Dr. Wells smiled faintly.
"The recordings are safely backed up."
"So are the financial transfers," Ethan replied.
"And the forged medical reports they stole?"
Ethan's eyes settled on the diamond ring still resting in his hand.
"They stole exactly what I wanted them to steal."
For six months, everyone believed Ethan Blackwood had been struggling to survive.
In reality...
May you like
he had been patiently collecting evidence.
And the trap had finally snapped shut.
