Chapter 1 – The Test Was Never About His Legs

The laughter lingered across the marble terrace long after Isabella finished speaking.

Crystal glasses froze halfway to elegant lips. Conversations dissolved into uneasy silence. Even the string quartet faltingly stopped playing.

Ethan Blackwood sat motionless in his wheelchair.

His expression revealed nothing.

No anger.

No embarrassment.

Only quiet observation.

Isabella leaned closer, her emerald dress shimmering beneath the afternoon sun.

"You heard me," she sneered. "I'm done pretending. I refuse to spend my life pushing a cripple around."

Several guests exchanged uncomfortable glances, but no one intervened.

They all knew Ethan Blackwood.

Or at least they believed they did.

The once-celebrated billionaire investor had disappeared from public life six months earlier after a devastating car accident left him supposedly paralyzed from the waist down.

Since then, rumors had spread faster than facts.

His empire was collapsing.

His health was failing.

His board was preparing to replace him.

And today, during what was supposed to be their engagement celebration, Isabella had decided to abandon a man she believed had already lost everything.

She ripped the diamond ring from her finger and threw it into his lap.

"It belongs to someone who still has a future."

The stone landed softly against the blanket covering his legs.

Across the patio, an elderly housekeeper named Martha collapsed to her knees.

"No, Miss Isabella..." she whispered through tears. "Please don't do this."

She hurried toward Ethan, carefully picking up the velvet blanket that had slipped onto the broken glass.

"I'm so sorry, Mr. Blackwood."

Ethan gently placed one hand over hers.

"It's alright."

His calm voice confused everyone.

Especially Isabella.

"You're smiling?" she scoffed. "After I just destroyed your pride?"

Ethan looked into her eyes for several long seconds.

Then he quietly asked,

"Is there anything else you'd like to say before we're finished?"

She laughed.

"Oh, absolutely."

She pointed toward the crowd.

"Everyone deserves to know the truth."

She turned dramatically toward the guests.

"I only stayed because I believed he'd recover. But now?" She shrugged. "He's worthless."

A few people gasped.

Others lowered their heads in shame.

Only Martha continued crying.

Ethan slowly lowered his gaze to his polished leather shoes.

Hidden beneath the blanket...

His right foot moved.

Just a fraction.

Almost invisible.

Only Martha noticed.

Her eyes widened.

She stared at him in disbelief.

Ethan barely shook his head.

Not yet.

Across the terrace, standing among the guests unnoticed, a silver-haired physician quietly checked his watch.

Dr. Adrian Wells.

The only man besides Ethan who knew the truth.

The paralysis had ended three weeks ago.

Everything afterward—

the fake medical reports,

the staged rehabilitation updates,

the rumors of bankruptcy,

even today's engagement party—

had been carefully arranged for one purpose.
