Chapter 9 - MANUEL’S VOICE

Arthur gathered the family in the study.

He placed a digital recorder on the desk.

Manuel’s voice filled the room.

My name is Manuel Joaquin Cardenas.

I am recording this statement voluntarily and with full mental capacity.

Veronica looked toward the windows.

She had claimed her father was confused.

His voice sounded weak but clear.

I left controlling ownership to Teresa Morales because those shares should have passed through my sister, Isabel.

I also chose Teresa because I have watched my children confuse inheritance with entitlement.

Rafael lowered his eyes.

Tomas remained still.

Manuel continued.

Teresa worked inside my home for fifteen years.

During those years, she showed greater care for the people around her than many who expected to inherit my name.

This trust is not payment for domestic labor.

It is restoration of stolen family rights.

Veronica stood.

“I am not listening to this.”

Arthur blocked the door.

“There is more.”

Manuel’s voice continued.

If Veronica attempts to sell company property to Harrison Avery, order a forensic audit.

If Rafael cooperates, examine whether he understood the documents he signed.

Tomas should not be blamed without evidence.

And if my death occurs before the audit begins, inspect my heart medication.

The room became silent.

Teresa looked toward Arthur.

“What did he mean?”

Arthur’s face was grave.

“Manuel told me his medication bottles had been moved.”

“He believed someone was changing the dosage.”

Veronica laughed too loudly.

“He was paranoid.”

“You said he was mentally competent when he appointed you chairwoman,” Tomas said.

Veronica looked at him.

“You cannot use both arguments.”

Arthur had requested preservation of Manuel’s medical samples before burial.

A toxicology review was already underway.

Veronica’s hand tightened around her handbag.

Teresa noticed.

So did Lucy.

The recorder played Manuel’s final words.

Teresa, do not protect this family by hiding what we became.

That mistake cost Isabel everything.

Do not repeat it.
