Arthur examined the handwritten page.
The recipe appeared ordinary at first.
Eight dried ancho peppers.
Four tablespoons of sesame seeds.
Two cinnamon sticks.
Beside several ingredients, Manuel had written dates and initials.

H.A.
The dates matched meetings listed in Cardenas Heritage Group’s corporate calendar.
Teresa remembered Manuel asking for the recipe repeatedly during his final months.
He had stood beside her while she cooked, making notes that seemed unnecessary.
She had thought he wanted to preserve Isabel’s favorite meal.
He had been creating a financial code.
Lucy arranged the numbers in a spreadsheet.
The ingredient quantities corresponded to account digits.
The dates identified transfers.
The initials identified executives.
V.C. appeared most often.
Veronica Cardenas.
Nearly six million dollars had moved from the company’s employee pension reserve into shell corporations.
Two of those companies belonged to Veronica.
Another belonged to her fiancé, Harrison Avery.
R.C. referred to Rafael.
His signature appeared on three transfers.
T.C., Tomas, did not appear anywhere.
Teresa sat at Manuel’s kitchen table.
“He knew they were stealing.”
Arthur nodded.
“He suspected it.”
“He needed enough evidence to stop Veronica without destroying the company.”
“Why leave the code with me?”
“Because he knew Veronica never looked at anything associated with kitchen work.”
The insult that made Teresa invisible had protected the evidence.
Arthur opened another envelope found beneath the recipe drawer.

If you are reading this, Veronica has likely tried to make you sign responsibility for the missing funds.
Do not accept money from her.
Do not surrender the trust.

Use it.
Teresa closed her eyes.
Manuel had known exactly what his daughter would do.
He had been preparing Teresa for a battle she had never asked to fight.
Lucy took her hand.
“You do not have to become like them.”
“What does that mean?”
“You do not have to want the money.”
“You only have to decide what the truth requires.”
The following morning, Teresa signed one document.
