Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO DISOWNED ISABEL
A ninety-two-year-old woman requested a meeting with Teresa.
Her name was Mercedes Lozano.
She was Manuel and Isabel’s maternal aunt.
Mercedes lived in a private care home outside San Antonio.
She had not spoken to the Cardenas family for decades.
Teresa traveled there with Lucy.
Mercedes touched Teresa’s face with trembling fingers.
“You have Isabel’s mouth.”
Teresa sat beside her.
“Why did no one tell me about this family?”
“Because your grandfather was a proud, frightened man.”
Joaquin Cardenas controlled every part of his children’s lives.
When Isabel fell in love with Miguel Morales, Joaquin demanded she end the relationship.
Isabel refused.
Then money disappeared from the family office.
Joaquin accused Miguel.
The accusation was false.
The money had been taken by Manuel’s older cousin, who later left the country.
Joaquin used the missing money as an excuse to expel Isabel.
“Did Manuel know Miguel was innocent?” Teresa asked.
“Not then.”
“He believed his father.”
“When did he learn?”
“Three years later.”
Teresa’s heart tightened.
“Why didn’t he find her?”
“He tried once.”
“Joaquin threatened to remove him from the company.”
“Manuel chose the inheritance.”
Mercedes began crying.
“He regretted it for the rest of his life.”
Teresa looked away.
Manuel had not been an innocent brother prevented from helping.
He had made a choice.
He later tried to repair it.
Both things were true.
Mercedes handed Teresa a bundle of letters.
They were the messages Isabel had sent to Manuel.
Joaquin intercepted them but did not destroy them.
One letter had been written after Miguel died.
Manny,
I am not asking to return home.
I am asking for help finding work because Teresa needs medicine.
Please do not punish my child for my choices.
Manuel never saw the words.
Teresa pressed the letter against her chest.
Her mother had asked for help.
