Chapter 6 - TESSA'S INSURANCE POLICY

Tessa did not hand me the drive.

She handed it to federal investigators the next morning.

Dominic had already contacted outside counsel.

Because Hale Strategic Systems held defense-adjacent logistics contracts, destroyed corporate records triggered immediate attention.

Tessa requested immunity.

Brandon hired three attorneys.

I went home with Sophie.

For the first time in seven years, Brandon did not come with us.

Sophie sat at the kitchen table coloring.

She finally looked up.

“Is Daddy mad at me?”

I put down my coffee.

“No.”

“Did I do something bad by going to the party?”

“No.”

“Then why did he look scared?”

Because his lies had collided in one ballroom.

I chose words a six-year-old could survive.

“Daddy made some grown-up mistakes.”

“Are you mad?”

“Yes.”

“At me?”

“Never.”

She nodded slowly.

Then returned to coloring.

Children ask for truth more simply than adults.

I wished Brandon had learned that.

Dominic arrived that afternoon.

He never looked like the “shadow king” journalists occasionally whispered about.

Gray sweater.

No tie.

Coffee in one hand.

But when he walked into a room, people usually started telling the truth.

He hugged Sophie first.

Then me.

“Show me.”

I gave him the forged transfer.

He studied it.

“Bad copy.”

“You noticed?”

“I watched you practice your signature for two years because Dad hated the first one.”

Despite everything, I smiled.

Then his face hardened.

“Tessa’s drive contains board emails.”

“How bad?”

“Very.”

He opened his laptop.

One email was from Brandon.

Prepare revised spousal status before Harrington vote.

Another:

Alyssa must appear fully divested.

Another:

Ensure Sophie cannot trigger inheritance objections.

I stopped.

“What inheritance objections?”

Dominic opened another file.

Hale Strategic Systems’ original capitalization agreement.

My brothers’ rescue funding had included protective provisions.

If Brandon died or transferred control, a trust established for Sophie gained certain conversion rights.

I had never known.

“You did this?”

“Nathaniel did.”

“Without telling me?”

“We expected Brandon to remain married to you.”

“That was stupid.”

“Yes.”

“I told you he loved me.”

“You did.”

“And you didn’t trust him.”

“No.”

I looked at the document.

The Whitmores had protected Sophie even while pretending to support Brandon.

Dominic leaned back.

“Tessa discovered the clause.”

“So Brandon needed Sophie excluded.”

“Yes.”

“And my shares transferred.”

“Yes.”

“Then he could merge with Harrington without triggering our rights.”

“That appears to be the plan.”

I thought of Claire.

“Did Claire know?”

“We have no evidence she did.”

“What about Evan?”

Dominic’s expression changed.

“What?”

“Brandon says Evan is his son.”

“Yes.”

“Is he?”

A pause.

“We’re checking.”

My stomach tightened.

“What aren’t you saying?”

“Tessa’s drive includes pediatric records.”

“For Evan?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know yet.”

He turned the laptop.

A scanned DNA report appeared.

PATERNITY PROBABILITY: 0.00%.

I stared at it.

“Brandon isn’t Evan’s father.”

“Apparently not.”

“Does Brandon know?”

Dominic opened an email.

From Tessa.

To Brandon.

Subject: KEEPING CLAIRE COMMITTED.

Attached was the DNA report.

Brandon had replied with two words.

DESTROY THIS.

I closed my eyes.

He had not only lied to me.

May you like

He had lied to Claire about being the father of her child.

And if he was willing to build a marriage around a boy he knew was not his, there had to be something bigger than romance at stake.
