Chapter 3 - THE NAME HE NEVER KNEW

Brandon stared at the screen.

Dominic continued.

“Harrington Dynamics currently operates under three major credit facilities.”

“One is controlled by Dominion Crest Bank.”

“One is guaranteed through a Whitmore Capital stabilization fund.”

“And the third was privately secured four years ago.”

The next slide appeared.

A signature.

Mine.

ALYSSA WHITMORE.

Gasps moved through the ballroom.

Brandon looked at me.

“What is that?”

I held Sophie closer.

“My maiden name.”

He laughed nervously.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You told me your family owned a small investment office.”

“They do.”

Technically.

Whitmore Capital was an investment office.

It simply managed more money than several countries.

Claire stared at me.

“Whitmore?”

Someone in the ballroom whispered my brother Graham’s name.

Then another person recognized Nathaniel.

The atmosphere changed instantly.

Brandon looked at me as if the woman he had lived with for seven years had disappeared.

“You’re one of those Whitmores?”

“I am.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

The absurdity almost made me smile.

“You’re standing beside another woman after presenting her as your fiancée.”

“You do not get to complain that I kept my last name private.”

Brandon looked up at the screen again.

“What did you finance?”

Dominic answered through the speakers.

“Everything you were about to lose.”

Charts appeared.

Four years earlier, Harrington Dynamics had been weeks from insolvency.

A private rescue facility stabilized suppliers.

A Whitmore-backed fund purchased distressed debt.

Dominion Crest extended new credit.

Brandon had believed investors suddenly trusted him.

In reality, my brothers had trusted me.

I had asked them to help without ever revealing why.

I wanted Brandon to believe his own hard work had saved the company.

That was my mistake.

I had protected his pride so thoroughly that he began believing every success belonged to him.

Victor Harrington stood.

“You told me your balance sheet was clean.”

Brandon’s face hardened.

“It is.”

“No.”

Nathaniel’s voice now came through the speakers.

“It is subsidized.”

A second screen displayed outstanding obligations.

Victor turned toward his attorneys.

Brandon looked at me.

“You set this up.”

“No.”

“You embarrassed me in front of everyone.”

I stared at him.

“I came here with a paper necklace.”

“You brought this on yourself.”

Sophie buried her face against my shoulder.

I kissed her hair.

That was when I realized something.

Tessa was no longer beside us.

I scanned the ballroom.

Gone.

Caleb approached.

“Mrs. Hale.”

“Where is Tessa?”

“She left through the service corridor.”

“Find her.”

Brandon laughed bitterly.

“You’re ordering security around now?”

I looked at him.

“I’m ordering people to protect evidence.”

“What evidence?”

I showed him Dominic’s message.

Two marriage licenses.

His face changed.

That reaction told me the records were real.

“What did you do?”

Brandon leaned closer.

“Not here.”

“Then where?”

“Anywhere without Sophie.”

I looked at my daughter.

He was right about one thing.

She did not need to hear more.

Caleb took Sophie to a private lounge with one of my family’s security officers.

Before leaving, she handed Brandon the necklace.

He took it automatically.

She looked up at him.

“Do you still want it?”

Brandon stared at the paper stars.

Then at her.

“Yes.”

Sophie nodded.

“Okay.”

She walked away.

Brandon looked down.

The words BEST DADDY EVER faced upward.

His hands began shaking.

For one brief second, I saw shame.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Tessa.

He answered.

Her voice was loud enough for me to hear.

“Brandon, they found the files.”

He turned pale.

“What files?”

May you like

Tessa’s answer came quickly.

“The ones proving Sophie was never supposed to inherit anything.”
