Chapter 19 - THE LETTER FROM PRISON

Brandon wrote to me after ten months.

I almost returned the envelope unopened.

Then I saw a second envelope inside.

For Sophie.

I read mine first.

Alyssa,

I used to think the worst thing I did was cheat.

It wasn’t.

The worst thing I did was turn people into roles.

You were access to Whitmore.

Claire was access to Harrington.

Tessa was access to information.

Evan was access to a trust.

Sophie was an obstacle when I should have seen her only as my daughter.

I told myself I loved all of you in different ways.

Maybe I did.

But love that keeps calculating what someone is worth to you becomes something else.

You once asked why I didn’t simply tell you about Charles.

I have had a lot of time to answer.

Because truth might have required me to trust you.

Revenge only required me to use you.

I chose the easier thing.

I am sorry.

Not because I expect forgiveness.

Because you deserved to hear one sentence from me without strategy behind it.

Brandon.

I folded the letter.

No tears.

No rage.

Just stillness.

Then I opened Sophie’s.

It was shorter.

Sweetheart,

I still wear your necklace.

Some of the stars are falling off.

I’m not fixing them because I want you to fix them with me when I come home.

I made choices that hurt people you love.

I’m working on being someone you can trust again.

You never have to protect my feelings.

You can be mad at me.

You can ask anything.

I love you.

Dad.

I gave it to Sophie.

She read slowly.

Then asked me what “strategy” meant because she had seen the word through the paper.

I laughed.

Later that night, she put the letter inside her treasure box.

Beside shells.

Birthday cards.

A tiny plastic horse.

Children know how to keep something without worshiping it.

I was learning.

Two weeks later, Victor Harrington accepted a plea agreement.

He surrendered significant assets.

Harrington Aerospace entered a restitution settlement related to Charles Hale’s intellectual property.

Claire used part of the settlement to establish the Charles Hale Innovation Fund.

She asked if I wanted Whitmore attached to the name.

“No.”

“Why?”

“It’s Charles’s turn.”

She smiled.

At the opening ceremony, Evan and Sophie cut the ribbon together.

Neither understood the history.

That was fine.

Children should inherit opportunity before they inherit resentment.

Afterward, Claire stood beside me.

“Do you ever wonder what would have happened if we met before Brandon?”

“We probably would have hated each other.”

She laughed.

“Definitely.”

Then Caleb approached.

His expression changed the mood instantly.

“Alyssa.”

“What?”

“We found something during the final Harrington archive transfer.”

“What kind of something?”

“A sealed file your father requested personally.”

I frowned.

“About Charles?”

“No.”

“About Brandon?”

May you like

Caleb shook his head.

“It’s about you.”
