Chapter 14 - TESSA'S REAL DEAL

Tessa stared at the lien document as if it belonged to someone else.

“I never filed this.”

Her attorney looked alarmed.

The filing carried her electronic signature.

Unlike the earlier email, this one had been authenticated from her personal device.

“I signed something.”

“What?”

“A compensation agreement.”

“When?”

“Eight months ago.”

“With Brandon?”

“Yes.”

She closed her eyes.

“He said I would receive equity after the merger.”

Dominic reviewed the contract.

Hidden inside was a security provision.

If Brandon failed to deliver the promised equity, Tessa acquired a lien over part of his existing shares.

He had signed it.

She had signed it.

Neither apparently understood how aggressively it could be enforced.

“Who drafted it?”

I asked.

Tessa whispered.

“Victor’s attorney.”

Of course.

Victor had made sure everyone had leverage over everyone else.

Brandon over Claire.

Claire through Evan.

Tessa over Brandon.

Brandon over me.

Me through Sophie.

A chain of dependency.

Dominic looked almost impressed.

“Victor didn’t build a merger.”

“He built a hostage structure.”

We challenged the lien.

But Tessa surprised me.

“Don’t.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“I’ll release it.”

“Why?”

She stared at the table.

“Because I’m done being paid with promises.”

She signed the release.

No negotiation.

No demand.

Then she looked at me.

“I hated you.”

“I know.”

“I thought you were weak.”

“I know.”

“He told me you stayed home because you had no ambition.”

I almost smiled.

“That sounds like Brandon.”

“I believed if I worked harder than you, I deserved him more.”

She laughed bitterly.

“As if a man were a promotion.”

I said nothing.

Tessa continued.

“When Sophie came into that gala with that necklace, I knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That he had lied.”

“Not because of you.”

“Because of her.”

Her voice cracked.

“A child doesn’t make something like that for a father who barely exists.”

I remembered Sophie carefully cutting stars at our kitchen table.

Tessa pushed a keycard toward me.

“What is this?”

“Private archive.”

“Victor gave it to Brandon.”

“I copied it.”

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

“What’s inside?”

“Contracts.”

“Audio.”

“Maybe enough to prove Victor knew exactly what he was doing.”

The archive was located in a private storage center outside Manhattan.

Inside, investigators found dozens of files.

Most concerned Harrington debt.

Some concerned Charles Hale.

One contained a folder labeled WHITMORE GIRL.

My stomach tightened.

Inside were photographs of me beginning when I was twenty-three.

Before Brandon.

Before marriage.

Victor had been tracking me for years.

Then we found the oldest photograph.

I was seventeen.

Standing beside my father at a charity event.

Victor Harrington was visible in the background.

Watching.

Dominic stared at it.

“This started before Brandon.”

A note attached to the photograph read:

YOUNGEST CHILD.

LOWEST PROFILE.

POTENTIAL ACCESS POINT.

I felt physically ill.

May you like

Brandon had not introduced Victor to me.

Victor had been waiting for someone like Brandon to do it.
