Chapter 6 - The Message in the Shoe

The shoe was clean.

Someone had washed away the dust from the chamber.

A folded note had been placed beneath the insole.

Ethan recognized Isabella’s handwriting.

YOUR FATHER WILL CHOOSE HIS NAME OVER YOU.

The words were designed for a nine-year-old.

Simple enough to understand.

Cruel enough to remain.

William read the note.

Then he handed it to Detective Ortiz without speaking.

The package had been delivered by a courier using cash.

Hospital security traced him to a coffee shop two blocks away.

He described the sender as an older woman with short gray hair.

Harris recognized the description.

Agnes Bell.

Isabella’s former housekeeper.

She had worked at the coastal estate during Claire’s death.

She disappeared shortly afterward.

Police found an address in Oregon.

The home was empty.

Inside were newspaper clippings about Claire’s accident, Ethan’s trust, and William’s second marriage.

A map of Sterling Manor covered one wall.

The hidden chamber had been marked in red.

So had the blue room.

Agnes had known everything.

A laptop contained an unsent email addressed to me.

Emma Torres.

She knew my name.

The message read:

You heard him because Claire chose the wall.

The vent was not an accident.

Isabella sealed the original doorway, but Claire built a second opening into the ballroom.

She knew someone serving guests might notice what the family ignored.

I read the message twice.

Claire had designed the chamber as an emergency shelter after receiving threats connected to the foundation.

The narrow vent opened behind the oversized painting.

A person carrying trays would stand closest to it.

Claire had trusted the invisible workers of the house more than its powerful residents.

The email continued.

Agnes claimed she helped Isabella after Claire’s death because she was afraid.

She removed medical records.

She cleaned the coastal house.

She told police Claire had been dizzy before the fall.

In exchange, Isabella paid for Agnes’s son’s surgery.

Agnes spent four years believing gratitude required silence.

Then she learned Isabella had imprisoned Ethan.

She decided to cooperate.

The final line contained a location.

Old Saint Matthew’s Convent.

Midnight.

Come without William.

Detective Ortiz refused to let me go alone.

We prepared a controlled meeting.

I wore a transmitter beneath my collar.

Police positioned themselves outside the abandoned convent.

At eleven fifty-eight, I entered the chapel.

Candles burned near the altar.

Agnes sat in the first pew.

Her gray hair matched the courier’s description.

She held Ethan’s other shoe.

“I am sorry,” she said.

“For which part?”

“All of it.”

She described Claire’s final day.

Claire planned to take Ethan and leave William.

She asked Agnes to pack the car.

Before they could depart, Isabella arrived with Conrad.

They argued near the cliff path.

Claire threatened to expose the foundation theft.

Conrad grabbed her.

Isabella reached for Claire’s bag.

Claire stumbled near the edge.

“She did not fall then,” Agnes whispered.

“She caught the railing.”

“What happened?”

“Isabella stepped on her hand.”

The chapel doors slammed shut behind me.

Agnes looked toward the entrance.

May you like

“No.”

“She found us.”
