Chapter 11 - The House of Portraits

Police surrounded Sterling Manor.

Isabella controlled the security system from inside.

Doors locked automatically.

Shutters covered the windows.

The manor’s private fire-suppression system had been disabled.

William arrived at the perimeter despite police orders.

Ethan remained at the secure facility with me and Dr. Bell.

A live feed from Isabella appeared on the estate website.

She stood inside the ballroom wearing Claire’s white evening gown.

The dress had supposedly been donated years earlier.

Behind her, family portraits lined the walls.

William.

Julian.

Claire.

Ethan.

Isabella had removed her own portraits.

The image looked less like vanity than judgment.

She addressed the camera.

“This house was built on sacrifice.”

“Claire wanted to dismantle it.”

“William wanted to apologize for it.”

“Julian wanted to inherit without carrying it.”

“Only I understood that families survive by controlling what outsiders know.”

She held up a folder.

Claire’s original toxicology report.

Then she looked toward the camera.

“William, bring Ethan home.”

“Or everything Claire left behind burns with me.”

At the secure facility, Ethan watched only because Isabella said his name.

Dr. Bell tried to turn off the screen.

He stopped her.

“She wants me to come.”

“You are not going,” I said.

“What if she burns Mommy?”

I knelt beside him.

“Your mother is not inside those papers.”

“She is not inside that dress.”

“She is not trapped in the house.”

Ethan looked toward me.

“Then where is she?”

“In what she tried to protect.”

“You.”

“The truth.”

“The choices people make now.”

He began crying.

“I want Dad.”

William spoke through a secure call.

“I am here.”

Ethan pressed the phone to his ear.

“Do not go inside.”

William looked toward the burning fuel visible behind Isabella.

“I will not.”

It was another promise.

This time, he checked the truth before making it.

Police negotiators kept Isabella talking.

Fire crews prepared near the eastern wing.

Then Detective Ortiz discovered movement beneath the estate.

The blue room connected to an older tunnel leading toward the foundation archive.

Isabella was not alone.

Conrad appeared on another camera.

He carried boxes of financial records toward the tunnel exit.

The fire threat was a distraction.

They planned to destroy the manor while escaping with enough evidence to blackmail everyone connected to the foundation.

Police entered through the basement.

Conrad fired at them.

The gunshot echoed through the live feed.

Isabella turned toward the ballroom doors.

“You were supposed to keep them below.”

Conrad’s voice came through her earpiece.

“The boy ruined the timeline.”

Isabella’s face changed.

She had always described Ethan as a problem.

Now millions of viewers heard it.

Then flames appeared behind the portraits.
