Chapter 9 - Sylvia’s Hidden Accounts
The financial investigation began with my missing salary.
It ended inside an offshore trust.
During our marriage, David deposited my remaining earnings into a household account controlled by Sylvia.
He told me the money covered expenses.
Records showed most of it entered the Mercer Family Preservation Trust.
The trust paid for Wallace Crane’s private plane, campaign donations, and Dr. Vale’s clinic.
Sylvia had also opened life-insurance policies on me.
One policy became active thirty days before Christmas.
David was the primary beneficiary.
Sylvia was secondary.
The amount was five million dollars.
Rebecca stared at the date.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
“Did you sign anything?”
“David brought forms during a prenatal appointment.”
“He said they updated hospital coverage.”
A handwriting expert confirmed the signature was mine.
The consent had been obtained through deception.
That alone did not prove a plan to kill me.
Another document came closer.
An email from Sylvia to David read:
If Anna’s condition worsens during delivery, the policy protects you from the consequences of her family’s neglect.
David replied:
She has no family in any practical sense.
The statement revealed what he believed.
My father existed only if he served David’s interests.
A separate email discussed Grace.
Sylvia wanted the child raised as a Mercer.
David promised my father would never gain access unless he supported their law firm.
My marriage had been more than control.
It had become a strategy.
Sylvia applied for release pending trial.
Her attorney described her as a frail grandmother who posed no threat.
Prosecutors played the Christmas recording.
The judge denied release.
As deputies led her away, Sylvia saw me in the gallery.
“You destroyed my son,” she said.
The courtroom heard.
I looked at her.
“No.”
