Chapter 12 - Anna Returns to the House

Three months after Christmas, I returned to Sylvia’s house.

Police had released the kitchen after completing evidence collection.

The property would be sold to satisfy civil claims.

Rebecca advised me not to go.

My therapist said returning might help if I controlled the conditions.

I entered with my father and Detective Torres.

The Christmas decorations had been removed.

A pale square remained on the wall where David’s thrown phone struck.

The granite counter looked ordinary.

That offended me.

A place could nearly take two lives and still reflect sunlight beautifully.

I stood where I had fallen.

My father remained near the doorway.

He did not crowd me.

“What do you feel?” he asked.

“Angry.”

“Afraid?”

“Yes.”

“Anything else?”

I looked toward the breakfast chair.

“Embarrassed.”

My father’s expression tightened.

“Why?”

“Because I stayed.”

“Because I served them.”

“Because I let Sylvia speak to me that way in front of people.”

He moved closer.

“Shame often arrives where blame should be.”

“That does not make it truthful.”

I touched the edge of the counter.

“I knew David was controlling.”

“I kept thinking marriage required patience.”

“Patience is not permission.”

I opened the cabinet where Sylvia stored her holiday serving dishes.

Behind them, I found a small envelope.

My name appeared in Rachel Monroe’s handwriting.

Inside was a note written six years earlier.

If you are reading this, he did to you what he did to me.

You are not crazy.

Leave before his mother teaches you to disappear.

Rachel had hidden the warning during her final night in the house.

Sylvia never found it.

Neither had I until now.

The letter could not change the past.

It connected two women David tried to keep isolated across time.

I gave it to Detective Torres.

Then I took the breakfast chair.

Not because it was valuable.

Because Sylvia had shoved me when I reached for it.

I placed it inside my new apartment near the window.

On the first morning Grace eventually came home, I sat there while feeding her.

Nobody ordered me to stand.
