Chapter 6 - The Search of the Mercer House

Police returned to Sylvia’s home with a search warrant.

David’s group messages provided probable cause for evidence tampering.

The kitchen had already been cleaned.

Sylvia claimed a housekeeper did it without instruction.

The granite counter smelled of bleach.

The broken phone was gone.

A trash bag containing glass fragments had been placed inside a neighbor’s garbage bin.

Security footage showed David carrying it there after midnight.

Detectives found more inside his office.

A folder labeled ANNA MEDICAL.

It contained fabricated summaries of psychiatric appointments I had never attended.

Dr. Stephen Vale, a physician who attended the Christmas dinner, had signed them.

One report diagnosed prenatal psychosis.

Another recommended that David receive emergency decision-making authority over me and the baby.

Both were dated two weeks before Christmas.

They had prepared to discredit me before the assault.

A second folder contained an unfinished petition seeking guardianship over Grace after birth.

Sylvia was listed as preferred guardian.

David planned to control both mother and child through medical paperwork.

The search also uncovered hidden recordings from the guesthouse.

Cameras had been installed in the kitchen, bedroom hallway, and living room.

David said they were for security.

The footage documented his behavior more accurately than mine.

One recording showed him taking my bank card.

Another showed Sylvia refusing to let me leave for a prenatal appointment because the driver was unavailable.

A third showed David blocking the door while I asked to call my father.

“You always run to imaginary authority when you do not get your way,” he said in the video.

“I will not let you embarrass me.”

The most disturbing recording came from six nights before Christmas.

David and Sylvia sat inside the guesthouse after I fell asleep.

They discussed my pregnancy.

“If it is a girl, Anna’s father may become interested,” Sylvia said.

“He does not know about the baby,” David replied.

“How can you be sure?”

“She barely speaks to him.”

“And after the delivery?”

“I will control access.”

“What if Anna leaves?”

David smiled.

“She has no money.”

“No current employment.”

“And medical records showing instability.”

The footage ended.

They had not lost control on Christmas.

Christmas exposed a structure they had built deliberately.

Detective Torres arrested David for obstruction, evidence tampering, coercive control, and preventing emergency assistance.

Sylvia was arrested for aggravated assault and conspiracy.

Dr. Vale was taken into custody for falsifying medical documents.

Wallace Crane received a subpoena concerning witness intimidation.

Television crews waited outside the police station.

David walked between officers wearing the same calm expression he used in court.

He stopped near the cameras.

“My wife’s politically powerful father is using state resources to persecute my family.”

The statement spread within minutes.

Several commentators believed him.

A headline appeared before sunset.

CHIEF JUSTICE’S SECRET DAUGHTER AT CENTER OF CHRISTMAS DOMESTIC DISPUTE.

I stared at the word dispute.

One word turned a shove, a broken phone, and a premature birth into two people disagreeing.

Rebecca took the tablet from me.

“Do not let the headline decide what happened.”

May you like

“I know what happened.”

“Then keep saying it.”
