Chapter 17 - BEATRIZ TAKES THE STAND

The family hearing was closed.
No reporters.
Good.
Isabella did not attend.
Better.
Beatriz testified for hours.
Her lawyer asked about her relationship with Isabella.
“I loved her.”
Past tense.
I noticed.
She described becoming overwhelmed while I traveled.
Said staff were undisciplined.
Said Isabella became disrespectful.
Said chores escalated because ordinary consequences stopped working.
Then Ana cross-examined.
“Did you tell Isabella her father agreed with the punishments?”
Beatriz paused.
“I may have said we had discussed discipline.”
“Had you?”
“Generally.”
“Did Gabriel approve garbage hauling?”
“No.”
“Bathroom scrubbing?”
“No.”
“Sleeping in the laundry room?”
Beatriz’s face tightened.
“That happened only after extreme behavior.”
“What behavior?”
“She screamed.”
Ana opened a document.
“School attendance records show Isabella was in class until 4:00 p.m. that day.”
“Yes.”
“Rosa says the punishment began before dinner.”
“I don’t remember.”
“Isabella says she asked to call her father.”
Silence.
Ana continued.
“Did you block communications to Gabriel?”
“I managed household communications.”
“Did you create email filters?”
“I don’t recall.”
Technology logs entered.
Then.
“Did you submit a boarding-school application?”
“Yes.”
“With Gabriel’s signature?”
“He had given general authority.”
“Do you possess written authorization to sign his name?”
“No.”
“Did you create educational guardianship forms?”
“I believed they reflected his wishes.”
“Did he sign them?”
Silence.
“Did you tell Isabella she would be sent to Switzerland if she talked?”
“No.”
The school recording played.
Beatriz closed her eyes.
Then Ana reached the financial motive.
“Did you ask Elena’s trust to reimburse nine hundred thousand euros per year?”
“That was a proposal.”
“Did companies connected to Sergio appear in the proposal?”
“Yes.”
“Did Sergio have a financial relationship with you?”
“Yes.”
“Romantic?”
Beatriz looked at me.
Then.
“Yes.”
I felt nothing.
That surprised her.
Finally, Ana played the voice recording.
Once the girl is in Switzerland, Gabriel will relax.
Then we start trust reimbursement.
Beatriz’s face emptied.
There was no explanation.
Only context.
She tried anyway.
“I was angry.”
Ana nodded.
“Anger made you invent a financial plan?”
No answer.
The judge did not rule immediately.
That was good.
Real decisions deserve time.
Outside, Beatriz approached me.
Her lawyer stayed nearby.
“You destroyed us.”
I looked at her.
“No.”
“You came home and decided everything I did was evil.”
“I came home and saw Isabella in garbage.”
Her eyes filled.
“I made mistakes.”
“Yes.”
“You were never there.”
There it was again.
I nodded.
“You’re right.”
She looked surprised.
“I was gone too much.”
“I trusted routine.”
“I ignored details.”
“I will answer to my daughter for that.”
Then I looked at her.
“But my absence did not force your hand.”
“You chose what you did with the space I left.”
She began crying.
For once, I let her.
May you like
Not cruelly.
Simply without rescuing her from the consequence of hearing herself.
