Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN IN THE SCHOOL OFFICE

Isabella’s school director requested a meeting.

Her name was Teresa León.

She had known Isabella since kindergarten.

The moment I entered her office, she looked angry.

Not at me.

At herself.

“I should have contacted you directly.”

My chest tightened.

“What happened?”

Isabella’s teachers noticed changes.

She stopped bringing lunch twice a week.

She fell asleep in reading class.

She became anxious whenever staff mentioned calling home.

The school emailed.

Beatriz responded.

Family adjustment.

Father abroad.

Therapist involved.

Please do not alarm Gabriel during major negotiations.

I stared.

“Therapist?”

There was no therapist.

Then Teresa opened a folder.

Beatriz had submitted a letter.

Supposedly from Dr. Cruz.

It described Isabella as testing boundaries and recommended consistent consequences.

I recognized the consultant’s name.

The man who refused residential placement without evaluation.

“Did you verify this?”

Teresa looked ashamed.

“No.”

“Why?”

“It came from her legal guardian.”

“Beatriz is not Isabella’s legal guardian.”

Silence.

Teresa stared.

“What?”

“I never gave her guardianship.”

The school file contained a form.

My signature.

Again.

Fake.

This one gave Beatriz broad educational authority.

Now we had multiple documents.

Boarding school application.

School authority.

Financial authorizations.

All supposedly signed by me.

Ana asked the obvious question.

“Who prepared them?”

Metadata pointed toward Sergio’s office.

The school also had something else.

A drawing.

Isabella made it during art class.

A house.

A tiny girl outside.

A large woman upstairs.

A plane in the sky.

Under the plane, Isabella had written.

DAD CAN’T HEAR ME.

I stared until the words blurred.

Teresa whispered.

“I thought it was about missing you.”

“It was.”

Just not the way anyone understood.

Then a teacher entered.

Ms. Parker.

British.

Isabella’s English teacher.

She closed the door.

“I recorded something by accident.”

My heart tightened.

During a school event, Ms. Parker had been filming children singing.

Afterward, the camera continued recording inside her bag.

Beatriz approached Isabella in the corridor.

Audio only.

Beatriz said.

“If you tell them anything about home, you know where you’ll end up.”

Isabella whispered.

“Switzerland?”

“Yes.”

“And your father will sign because he is tired of problems.”

I stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

“Do you understand?”

“Yes.”

“Say thank you.”

A tiny voice.

“Thank you.”

The room became completely silent.

Ana looked at me.

“That changes the family case.”

It changed more than that.

It proved Isabella’s fear was not coaching.

It existed before I returned.

Before separation.

May you like

Before any public dispute.

Beatriz had created the evidence herself.
