Chapter 14 - THE COMPANY TURNS ON ME

My board did exactly what boards are supposed to do.
It asked whether my family crisis was affecting judgment.
I hated them for it.
Then respected them.
We met in Madrid.
No Beatriz.
No Isabella.
Just business.
One director said.
“Gabriel, the press is affecting our lenders.”
“I know.”
“Your attention is divided.”
“Yes.”
“Should you step aside temporarily?”
I wanted to say no.
Instead, I asked.
“What do you recommend?”
Thirty-day temporary leave from daily operations.
My COO would manage.
I would retain strategic voting rights but no routine executive duties.
At first, it felt like Beatriz had won.
She abused my daughter.
Stole money.
Forged documents.
And I was the one leaving my office.
Then my COO, Javier, said.
“This is not punishment.”
“It feels like it.”
“It’s governance.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Very comforting.”
He leaned forward.
“You built a company that can survive thirty days without you.”
“Prove you meant to.”
He was right.
So I stepped back.
That became the lowest business moment.
The personal one came two days later.
Isabella refused to sleep.
She sat on the floor outside my bedroom.
“Why are you there?”
She shrugged.
“Just in case.”
“In case what?”
“You leave.”
I sat beside her.
“I told you I’m staying.”
“Beatriz said adults say things before they go.”
I closed my eyes.
Trust had become a daily exercise.
Not a promise.
So I changed my calendar.
I showed Isabella.
School pickup.
Doctor.
Therapy.
Dinner.
My meetings.
Travel.
Everything.
Then I gave her access to the shared family calendar.
“If something changes, you see it.”
She looked surprised.
“Everything?”
“Almost.”
“What about secret business?”
“You don’t need hotel contracts.”
She smiled.
Then pointed to Friday.
“Madrid.”
“Yes.”
“You come back?”
“Same night.”
“Promise?”
I paused.
“No.”
Her face changed.
Then I said.
“I promise that if the plan changes, I tell you.”
“That is better than promising something I cannot control.”
She thought.
Then nodded.
“Okay.”
Small moment.
Huge lesson.
Beatriz built fear through false certainty.
I would rebuild trust through honest limits.
That night, Ana called.
Sergio had turned over his messages with Beatriz.
One thread made my stomach drop.
Beatriz wrote.
Once Gabriel signs, we need Isabella gone before he starts asking questions.
Sergio replied.
And if he cancels Dubai?
Beatriz answered.
He won’t.
His ego likes finishing what everyone else says is impossible.
I stared at the message.
May you like
She had not only exploited my work.
She had exploited my pride.
