Chapter 8 – The Empire Falls

Three days into the trial, everything unraveled.
A former chief financial officer of Holloway Select Markets accepted a plea agreement with federal prosecutors.
His testimony lasted nearly six hours.
He described fake invoices, shell companies, offshore accounts, and millions of dollars hidden from investors.
Every document matched evidence investigators had seized from the Holloway offices.
Grant listened with his head lowered.
Margaret repeatedly whispered to their attorneys, but even they struggled to hide their concern.
Outside the courthouse, the company's stock collapsed.
Board members announced Grant's immediate removal as chief executive.
Banks froze corporate credit lines.
Major suppliers suspended contracts.
By the end of the week, the empire that had taken decades to build was collapsing faster than anyone thought possible.
Back inside the courtroom, Hannah testified.
She spoke softly but never looked away from the jury.
She described how isolation came first.
Then control.
Then fear.
"The bruises healed," she said.
"What didn't heal was believing I deserved them."
Several jurors nodded quietly.
When Grant's attorney suggested she could have left at any time, Hannah answered without hesitation.
"People always ask why victims stay."
She took a slow breath.
"They never ask why abusers believe they have the right to hurt someone."
No further questions were asked.
Evelyn watched her daughter leave the witness stand with her head held high.
