One year later, autumn returned to Chicago.
Golden leaves drifted along the sidewalk outside Carter's Table, just as they had on the morning Evelyn drove to Lake Forest with a pot of chicken-and-dumpling soup.
The diner was full.
Old Frank occupied his usual booth.
Maria laughed with customers over fresh coffee.
Children pressed their noses against the dessert display, arguing over slices of apple cobbler.
Near the entrance hung a simple framed photograph.
It showed Evelyn and Hannah standing together outside the diner beneath a new neon sign.

"Remember this recipe?" she asked.
Evelyn laughed.
"It saved more than one life."
Hannah reached across the table and held her mother's hands.
"You saved mine."
Evelyn looked around the little diner that had carried them through grief, hardship, and hope.

Outside, the neon sign glowed warmly against the cool October sky.
