Chapter 5 – Grant Makes One Last Threat
That afternoon, Grant Holloway arrived at the diner.
He stepped from his black Mercedes wearing an expensive charcoal suit and sunglasses, as though he were attending a board meeting instead of confronting the family he had terrorized.
Customers stopped eating as he walked inside.
“Evelyn,” he said calmly. “We should settle this privately.”
“No.”
“You haven’t even heard my offer.”
“I heard enough when you watched my daughter bleed.”
Grant smiled without warmth.
“Hannah signed a prenuptial agreement. She leaves with nothing.”
Hannah slowly stood beside her mother.
“I’d rather leave with nothing than stay with you.”
For the first time, Grant’s confidence flickered.
“You’re making a mistake.”
“No,” Hannah answered. “I finally stopped making one.”
Grant leaned closer.
“You have no idea what my family can do.”
Evelyn stepped between them.
“I know exactly what your family can do.”
She lowered her voice.
“And now I know what they’ve already done.”
Something in her tone made Grant hesitate.
His eyes searched hers, looking for uncertainty.
He found none.
Outside, two detectives climbed from an unmarked police vehicle.
James had quietly called them twenty minutes earlier.
Grant noticed the badges.
His smile disappeared.
“You involved the police?”
“No,” Evelyn replied evenly.
“They involved themselves after seeing the evidence.”
Grant turned and walked quickly toward his car without another word.
