Chapter 7 – The Trial That Changed Everything
The courtroom was overflowing long before the judge entered.
Television cameras crowded the courthouse steps outside, while reporters whispered eagerly inside the gallery. For weeks, Chicago had followed every detail of the Holloway scandal. What had begun as a domestic abuse investigation had grown into allegations of financial fraud, witness intimidation, tax evasion, and corporate corruption.
Grant Holloway sat at the defense table in a navy suit that no longer carried the confidence it once had. His expensive watch was gone. His wedding ring had disappeared. Beside him, Margaret Holloway stared straight ahead, refusing to acknowledge anyone in the courtroom.
Hannah squeezed Evelyn's hand.
"I'm scared."
"You don't have to be afraid anymore," Evelyn whispered. "Today, they're the ones being judged."
The prosecution called its first witness.
Linda Brooks.
The former housekeeper walked to the stand with steady steps.
For nearly two hours, she described the abuse she had witnessed inside the Holloway mansion.
Margaret's insults.
Grant's silence.
The bruises hidden beneath long sleeves.
The nights Hannah cried herself to sleep after cleaning a house that never accepted her.
Then came the security footage.
The courtroom lights dimmed.
The jury watched in complete silence as Margaret dragged Hannah across the living room by her hair.
Grant appeared only a few feet away, staring at his phone.
No one moved.
When the video ended, several jurors wiped tears from their eyes.
Grant's attorney stood slowly.
"Mrs. Brooks," he asked, "why didn't you report this sooner?"
Linda looked directly at the jury.
"Because I was afraid."
She paused.
"But Hannah was more afraid than I ever was."
