Chapter 9 - The Nurse Who Saved the Record

The nurse who witnessed Vanessa’s kick was named Hannah Cole.

She had worked at Saint Claire Medical Center for eleven years.

When Raymond thanked her, she began crying.

“I should have spoken sooner.”

Emily asked what she meant.

Hannah revealed that Dr. Lawrence Whitmore had pressured maternity nurses to report Emily as confused, anxious, or uncooperative.

He offered promotions to anyone willing to document an “incident.”

Most nurses refused quietly.

One accepted.

Her name was Melissa Dane.

Melissa had altered Emily’s chart, prepared the induction medication, and placed the drugged water beside the bed.

She had also disabled the fetal alarm in Maternal Assessment Room One.

Dr. Patel checked the equipment.

The alarm would not have sounded if the baby’s heart rate dropped.

Emily’s body went cold.

“They did not only plan to induce labor.”

Dr. Patel looked grim.

“No.”

“They planned to create a medical emergency without an automatic alert.”

If the baby became distressed, Preston could claim Emily delayed treatment.

Lawrence could declare her unstable.

The early birth would activate the child’s trust.

Then the baby could be placed under Preston’s guardianship.

Security searched for Melissa.

She had left the hospital through the loading dock.

Her apartment was empty.

Her bank account contained a recent deposit of five hundred thousand dollars.

The money came from Robert Hale.

Police issued warrants.

Vanessa agreed to provide every message on her phone.

One recording captured Preston speaking to Lawrence.

“If Emily wakes up before the board vote, what do we do?”

Lawrence answered.

“She will not wake up before the vote.”

Another recording contained Robert’s voice.

“The baby must survive.”

“The trust is worthless without him.”

Preston asked about Emily.

Robert replied.

“She has already served her purpose.”

Emily listened without moving.

Raymond reached to stop the recording.

She shook her head.

“No.”

“I need to hear all of it.”

The final audio came from the previous night.

Melissa asked Lawrence what diagnosis should appear if Emily died during the induction.

Lawrence answered immediately.
