Chapter 18 - What Their Mothers Left Behind

Vanessa opened the refrigerated vault.
“These samples prove they were given the same drug.”
Emily stared at the labels.
Elizabeth and Caroline had both been poisoned.
Lawrence Whitmore ordered the medication.
Robert Hale approved the payment.
Victor Shaw altered the laboratory results.
Caroline discovered the truth after Elizabeth died.
She threatened to expose them.
They poisoned her too.
Vanessa had carried the evidence for years.
“Why did you never release it?”
“I needed the entire network.”
“You built another network instead.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“I wanted them to feel powerless.”
“So you made me powerless.”
“Yes.”
The answer came without apology.
Sirens approached through the tunnel.
Vanessa raised the pistol again.
“This evidence belongs to me.”
“No.”
“It belongs to every patient they hurt.”
Emily stepped between Vanessa and the vault exit.
“You can still hand it over.”
“And spend my life in prison?”
“You assaulted me.”
“You helped drug me.”
“You participated in an attempted kidnapping.”
“You will face consequences.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Then why would I help?”
“Because your mother tried to protect mine.”
“Because becoming a monster does not have to be the final thing you do.”
Vanessa’s pistol lowered slightly.
A shot came from the upper stairwell.
The bullet struck the vault door beside Emily.
Lawrence Whitmore stood above them.
He had escaped house arrest with the help of the same corrupt deputy.
He aimed at the blood samples.
“No records.”
“No case.”
Vanessa fired back.
Lawrence fell behind the railing.
Raymond’s security officers rushed him.
Vanessa looked at Emily.
For one suspended second, the two women stood beside the evidence their mothers had died protecting.
Then Vanessa placed the pistol on the floor.
“Take the samples.”
Federal investigators recovered the entire archive.
Sophie was freed unharmed.
Hannah confessed to sending the photographs and received protection for cooperating.
Vanessa surrendered.
Lawrence survived his wound.
He would stand trial beside Robert, Victor, Jonathan, Preston, and the others.
The conspiracy that began with Elizabeth’s death was finally exposed.
But Emily’s battle was not finished.
