Chapter 8 - Elizabeth Saint Claire’s Death

Emily’s mother had died twelve years earlier after a brief illness.
The official diagnosis was an aggressive autoimmune disorder.
Raymond funded every treatment.
Robert stayed beside her bed.
Emily was twenty-one and believed every adult around her was telling the truth.
Now Raymond closed the door to her hospital room and sat beside her.
“Your mother’s illness was not natural.”
Emily stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
“Her blood contained a medication she had never been prescribed.”
“A medication capable of damaging the immune system over time.”
“Who gave it to her?”
“We never proved it.”
“You suspected my father.”
Raymond nodded.
Elizabeth discovered Robert had been stealing from a charitable foundation.
She planned to divorce him.
Three weeks later, she became sick.
Raymond hired a private investigator.
The investigator found payments connecting Robert to Lawrence Whitmore.
Before he could complete the report, he died in a house fire.
Raymond feared that accusing Robert without proof would push Emily away.
So he protected the trust and waited.
“You let me marry Preston.”
“I investigated him.”
“He appeared clean.”
“Because my father prepared him.”
Raymond lowered his head.
“Yes.”
Emily felt betrayed from every direction.
Her father had sold her.
Her husband had drugged her.
Her uncle had hidden the most important truth of her life.
“You asked me never to use you as a weapon.”
“I wanted you to build a life that did not depend on my power.”
“You should have given me facts.”
“I know.”
Silence filled the room.
Then Emily asked the question she feared most.
“Did Lawrence treat my mother?”
“He consulted during her final month.”
The same man who signed Emily’s false psychiatric hold had been involved in Elizabeth’s care.
Raymond’s legal team searched archived records.
Most had been deleted.
One medication log survived on an old backup server.
Lawrence had authorized every infusion during Elizabeth’s final two weeks.
The final order contained a handwritten note.
Continue until trust transfer is complete.
The transfer had failed because Elizabeth signed the Saint Claire shares to Emily hours before she lost consciousness.
Robert and Lawrence had waited twelve years for another path.
Preston’s marriage to Emily gave them one.
Her pregnancy gave them another.

The assault in the hallway was not the beginning of the plan.
It was the final step of a conspiracy that began with her mother’s death.
