Chapter Nine — The Fire That Came Too Late

Flames consumed the west wing of the Whitmore Estate.

Firefighters battled the blaze from every direction as thick black smoke poured into the night sky.

Gabriel Hayes arrived just as the first section of the library roof collapsed.

He jumped out of his SUV before it had fully stopped.

"Where is Olivia?"

Officer Daniels pointed toward an ambulance parked near the front gate.

"She's safe."

Gabriel exhaled in relief and hurried across the lawn.

Olivia sat on the rear bumper of the ambulance wrapped in a blanket, soot streaked across her face. One hand rested protectively over her stomach.

The moment she saw Gabriel, she stood.

"I'm okay."

He looked her over carefully.

"Are you hurt?"

She shook her head.

"I smelled gasoline."

"When I opened the library door, I heard something ticking."

"I ran."

"Thirty seconds later..."

She looked toward the burning mansion.

"...the room exploded."

Fire investigators quickly confirmed her suspicion.

The explosion wasn't caused by faulty wiring.

It was deliberate.

A military-grade incendiary device had been hidden beneath the library floor.

Detective Bennett stared at the remains.

"Someone knew exactly where the evidence was."

Gabriel nodded.

"Which means someone knew about the hidden room."

"But only four people knew it existed."

Olivia.

Gabriel.

Bennett.

Rachel.

None of them had spoken publicly.

Someone else had been watching.

The FBI recovered fragments of the bomb's triggering mechanism.

Special Agent Karen Ellis examined the serial numbers.

She frowned.

"I've seen this design before."

Gabriel looked up.

"Where?"

"A federal evidence warehouse bombing."

"Nine years ago."

"The same type of timer."

"The same wiring."

She opened an old case file.

"No one was ever charged."

Gabriel's eyes narrowed.

"Who was the lead suspect?"

Karen slid the file across the table.

Nathan's father.

Charles Carter.

Even from the grave, Charles Carter's methods were resurfacing.

Meanwhile, Nathan sat inside the county jail watching the breaking news.

EXPLOSION DESTROYS HISTORIC WHITMORE ESTATE LIBRARY

He smiled.

It was the first genuine smile anyone had seen from him in weeks.

His cellmate noticed.

"You expecting good news?"

Nathan answered quietly.

"Some mistakes burn away."

He believed every document inside the hidden room had been destroyed.

He was wrong.

Hours before the explosion, Rachel had insisted on scanning every page of the files.

Lisa Moreno had worked through the afternoon, creating encrypted digital copies and uploading them to secure federal servers.

By the time the bomb exploded...

The evidence already existed in three separate locations.

The fire had destroyed paper.

Not the truth.

When Gabriel told Olivia, she laughed for the first time since the attack.

"My grandfather always made backups."

Gabriel smiled.

"Looks like he taught us well."

The following morning, Judge Eleanor Grant convened Nathan's preliminary hearing.

The courtroom overflowed with reporters.

Victims of Carter Development's fraudulent schemes filled the public gallery.

Nathan entered wearing a dark suit instead of his usual tailored designer clothing.

For the first time, he looked like an ordinary defendant.

The prosecutor presented the evidence one piece at a time.

The security footage.

Vanessa's testimony.

The text message.

Rachel's financial records.

The bombing investigation.

Each revelation chipped away at Nathan's confidence.

Finally, Judge Grant looked directly at him.

"Mr. Carter, based on the evidence presented, this court finds probable cause on multiple felony counts."

She paused.

"Including attempted murder, conspiracy, witness intimidation, arson, financial fraud, and racketeering."

Gasps echoed through the courtroom.

Nathan's attorney stood.

"Your Honor, my client maintains his innocence."

Judge Grant nodded.

"He is presumed innocent."

"But he is also denied bail."

The gavel struck.

Nathan was led away in handcuffs.

For the first time, there would be no luxury penthouse waiting for him.

Only a jail cell.

As deputies escorted Nathan through a courthouse hallway, he caught sight of Olivia.

She stood quietly with Gabriel.

Neither of them spoke.

Nathan stopped walking.

"Olivia."

She turned.

"I loved you."

Her expression remained calm.

"No."

"You loved what you could take from me."

The deputies urged him forward.

Nathan resisted.

"You're making a mistake."

Olivia looked him in the eyes one final time.

"The biggest mistake was yours."

"You thought surviving meant I would stay silent."

Nathan had no answer.

He disappeared behind the security doors.

That evening, Gabriel received the final forensic report from the bombing.

A partial fingerprint had survived on a fragment of the detonator.

He expected it to belong to one of Nathan's hired men.

Instead...

The laboratory identified someone no one had suspected.

Gabriel read the report twice before speaking.

"That's impossible."

Detective Bennett looked over his shoulder.

His face went pale.

The fingerprint belonged to...

Richard Sloan.

Nathan's attorney.

The man who had represented him from the beginning.

The same attorney who had sat through every police interview.

Every court hearing.

Every strategy meeting.

Bennett whispered,

"He wasn't just defending Nathan..."

"He was protecting himself."

Gabriel slowly closed the file.

May you like

"The conspiracy isn't over."

"It's just finally revealing everyone inside it."
