Chapter Three — The Video They Couldn't Erase

Olivia Carter regained consciousness just after sunrise.
The room was quiet except for the steady rhythm of heart monitors.
Sunlight filtered through the ICU window, painting pale lines across the white blanket covering her.
Her entire body ached.
Every breath felt like broken glass pressing against her ribs.
Slowly, her hand moved to her stomach.
The baby kicked.
A tiny movement.
Small.
Weak.
But unmistakably alive.
Tears rolled down Olivia's cheeks.
"Thank God..."
The door opened.
Dr. Amelia Brooks entered with a gentle smile.
"You gave us quite a scare."
Olivia managed a faint smile.
"My baby?"
"The heartbeat is stronger this morning."
"You'll both need a long recovery, but you're still together."
Olivia closed her eyes in relief.
Then another memory crashed into her mind.
Vanessa.
The courthouse steps.
Nathan standing there.
Watching.
"He never moved..." she whispered.
Dr. Brooks noticed the sudden panic.
"What happened out there, Olivia?"
Olivia stared at the ceiling.
"He watched me fall."
Across town, Nathan Carter sat alone inside his penthouse office.
Every television in the room carried the same story.
PROMINENT DEVELOPER'S PREGNANT WIFE SERIOUSLY INJURED OUTSIDE COURTHOUSE
The headlines were careful.
No accusations.
Not yet.
His phone rang.
It was his public relations director.
"We've stopped most of the media."
"For now."
Nathan rubbed his temples.
"And the witness?"
"He's just an old maintenance worker."
"We'll discredit him."
Nathan remained silent.
"What about the security footage?"
"We've confirmed the courthouse camera failed."
Nathan finally relaxed.
"Good."
He had no idea how wrong he was.
Meanwhile, inside the Federal Digital Evidence Center...
A forensic analyst named Lisa Moreno stared at the recovered video.
The file had automatically uploaded to the federal archive through an emergency judicial backup system.
Nothing had been altered.
Nothing had been compressed.
Every frame remained crystal clear.
She called Gabriel immediately.
"You need to see this."
Twenty minutes later...
Gabriel entered the secure evidence room.
Lisa handed him a pair of headphones.
"You may want to sit down."
He remained standing.
"Play it."
The video began.
The courthouse entrance appeared exactly as it had looked the previous afternoon.
People entered and exited.
Reporters waited.
Nathan stood beside the black sedan.
Vanessa walked toward Olivia.
The camera angle wasn't perfect, but it showed enough.
Gabriel watched silently.
Vanessa stepped closer.
They exchanged words.
Olivia shook her head.
Vanessa looked over her shoulder.
Directly at Nathan.
Nathan gave one small nod.
Barely noticeable.
But unmistakable.
Lisa paused the video.
"See that?"
Gabriel nodded slowly.
"Play it."
The footage continued.
Vanessa placed both hands on Olivia's shoulders.
Then—
She shoved her.
Hard.
Olivia stumbled backward.
Reached for the railing.
Missed.
Her body disappeared down the staircase.
The crowd screamed.
Nathan never moved.
Not once.
He simply watched.
Lisa stopped the recording.
The room fell silent.
Finally she spoke.
"This wasn't an accident."
Gabriel's jaw tightened.
"No."
"It was attempted murder."
Detective Marcus Bennett arrived an hour later.
Lisa replayed the footage.
He watched every second without blinking.
When the recording ended, he leaned back in his chair.
"That's enough for an arrest."
Gabriel folded his arms.
"Not yet."
Bennett looked surprised.
"What do you mean?"
"If Nathan only wanted a divorce..."
"Why risk murdering a pregnant woman in broad daylight?"
The detective considered the question.
"You're thinking there's something bigger."
Gabriel nodded.
"This wasn't about anger."
"It was about desperation."
Across the city...
Vanessa paced nervously inside Nathan's luxury apartment.
"I can't sleep."
Nathan poured himself another glass of whiskey.
"You need to calm down."
"They have witnesses."
"They don't have proof."
She stared at him.
"What if Olivia wakes up?"
Nathan's expression remained cold.
"Then she won't remember."
Vanessa froze.
"What does that mean?"
Nathan took a slow sip.
"Nothing."
But Vanessa suddenly realized something she had ignored for months.
Nathan wasn't frightened.
He wasn't grieving.
He wasn't even worried about his wife.
He was calculating.
Exactly the way he calculated business deals.
For the first time...
Vanessa wondered whether she was safe around him.
That afternoon, Olivia asked to see Gabriel.
When he entered her hospital room, neither of them spoke immediately.
Twenty years had passed since they had seen each other.
Time had changed them.
But not entirely.
"You became famous," Olivia said softly.
Gabriel smiled faintly.
"So did you."
She laughed once.
It hurt too much to continue.
"I heard you were in Washington."
"I was."
"What brought you back?"
Gabriel looked out the window.
"My father died."
"I came home to settle his estate."
Olivia lowered her eyes.
"So... you weren't supposed to be there yesterday."
"No."
"I stopped by the courthouse to file probate documents."
He looked directly at her.
"If I'd arrived thirty seconds earlier..."
She interrupted him.
"This isn't your fault."
A long silence followed.
Finally Gabriel asked,
"Did Nathan know about the baby?"
Olivia nodded.
"Yes."
"He also knew..."
She hesitated.
"...I wasn't signing the divorce papers."
"What papers?"
"The property transfers."
Gabriel frowned.
"What property?"
Olivia looked genuinely confused.
"You don't know?"
"Know what?"
"My grandfather's trust."
Gabriel leaned closer.
"What trust?"
Olivia swallowed carefully.
"My grandfather left everything to me."
"The ranch."
"The mineral rights."
"The investment accounts."
"Nearly two hundred million dollars."
Gabriel stared at her.
"Nathan told everyone your grandfather died bankrupt."
Olivia shook her head.
"That was the lie."
"The inheritance transferred six months ago."
"And according to the prenuptial agreement..."
She closed her eyes.
"If I signed the divorce papers..."
"Nathan would control everything until our child turned eighteen."
Gabriel's expression darkened.
"So the baby wasn't the obstacle."
Olivia whispered,
"The baby was the prize."
At the Carter Corporation headquarters, Nathan received an unexpected visitor.
An elderly banker placed a sealed envelope on his desk.
"You asked to be notified if anyone accessed the Whitmore Trust."
Nathan nodded impatiently.
"Well?"
The banker looked uneasy.
"Someone requested the complete financial history this morning."
Nathan's face tightened.
"Who?"
The banker slid over a printed authorization.
Nathan read the signature.
His hands began to shake.
Authorized By: Gabriel Hayes
Nathan looked up slowly.
"Why would a federal prosecutor investigate a private trust?"
The banker answered quietly.
"He wouldn't..."
"...unless he believed the money was the motive."
Nathan suddenly understood.
The investigation was no longer about a fall down courthouse steps.
It was about a fortune.
And if detectives followed the money...
May you like
They might uncover a secret Nathan had buried years earlier.
A secret worth killing to protect.
