Chapter Four — The Secret Buried in the Trust

Nathan Carter didn't sleep that night.
He sat alone in his penthouse office, the city lights reflecting off the glass walls while the folder from Whitmore National Bank lay open on his desk.
Inside was a copy of Olivia's grandfather's trust.
He had read it dozens of times.
Every word reminded him why Olivia had become far more valuable alive than dead... until she refused to cooperate.
The trust was simple.
If Olivia remained alive, every asset belonged solely to her.
If she died while carrying a living heir, everything would be held in trust for the child until adulthood.
Nathan, as the child's legal father, would control every financial decision.
But there was one clause he had never expected anyone to notice.
A handwritten amendment added only three years earlier.
If Olivia died as the result of criminal conduct by her spouse—or anyone acting on the spouse's behalf—Nathan would inherit nothing.
Instead...
Every dollar would be transferred to the Whitmore Children's Foundation, and legal custody of the child would be reviewed by the court.
Nathan slammed the folder shut.
"Damn it."
Someone had changed the trust after he'd married Olivia.
Across town, Gabriel was reading the exact same amendment.
Judge Eleanor Whitmore, Olivia's late grandmother and one of the state's most respected judges, had personally added the clause after quietly expressing concerns about Nathan's character.
Gabriel looked up from the document.
"She knew."
Detective Marcus Bennett nodded.
"Looks that way."
Gabriel tapped the handwritten paragraph.
"This changes everything."
"If Nathan planned Olivia's death..."
"He stood to lose everything the moment the crime was proven."
Bennett frowned.
"Then why take the risk?"
Gabriel looked toward the evidence board.
"Because I don't think he knew this amendment existed."
At Carter Development headquarters, Vanessa demanded answers.
"You lied to me."
Nathan didn't even look up from his laptop.
"What are you talking about?"
"You said Olivia was keeping your money."
"You never said she owned two hundred million dollars."
Nathan sighed.
"It doesn't matter now."
"It matters to me."
She stepped closer.
"You promised we'd build a life together."
Nathan finally raised his eyes.
"And we will."
"When this is over."
Vanessa folded her arms.
"No."
"When you tell me the truth."
Nathan stood.
"The truth?"
His voice became dangerously calm.
"The truth is I built everything."
"I turned a dying company into an empire."
"I deserve every dollar."
Vanessa stared at him.
"But it isn't yours."
For a split second, something cold flashed across Nathan's face.
The same expression she'd seen just before Olivia fell.
It disappeared almost instantly.
"You should go home."
She hesitated.
"Nathan..."
"I said leave."
For the first time since their affair began, Vanessa obeyed without another word.
The next morning, Olivia gave her formal statement.
Detective Bennett switched on the recorder.
"For the record, please state your name."
"Olivia Grace Carter."
"Do you remember what happened outside the courthouse?"
Olivia closed her eyes.
Every detail returned with painful clarity.
"Vanessa stopped me."
"She said I should have signed the papers."
"What papers?"
"The divorce settlement."
"What happened next?"
Olivia's voice trembled.
"I told her no."
"Then she looked at Nathan."
"Did Nathan say anything?"
"No."
"But he nodded."
Bennett glanced at Gabriel.
Neither man interrupted.
Olivia continued.
"Then Vanessa pushed me."
"There was no accident."
"I remember falling."
"I remember Nathan watching."
She opened her eyes.
"He never tried to save me."
Outside the hospital, television crews gathered as news of Olivia's statement spread.
By noon, every major network carried the same breaking headline.
PREGNANT HEIRESS ACCUSES HUSBAND AND MISTRESS OF PLANNED ATTACK
Nathan's stock price dropped nine percent before lunch.
Board members began calling.
Investors demanded explanations.
The damage was only beginning.
Inside the police evidence lab, Lisa Moreno made another discovery.
She replayed the courthouse footage frame by frame.
Something caught her eye.
Just seconds before Vanessa approached Olivia...
Nathan had taken out his phone.
He sent a text message.
The security camera couldn't read the screen.
But it clearly captured the exact time.
2:13:41 PM.
Lisa immediately subpoenaed Nathan's phone records.
An hour later, the carrier responded.
One outgoing text.
Recipient: Vanessa Brooks.
Time: 2:13:41 PM.
The message itself had been deleted.
Lisa smiled.
"Not good enough."
Deleted didn't mean destroyed.
By evening, forensic technicians recovered the text from the phone company's backup servers.
Lisa printed the report and carried it directly to Detective Bennett.
He read it once.
Then again.
His expression hardened.
The message contained only three words.
Do it now.
Silence filled the room.
Bennett slowly placed the paper on his desk.
"That's conspiracy."
Gabriel nodded.
"And attempted murder."
Just then Bennett's phone rang.
He answered.
After only twenty seconds, his face changed completely.
"What?"
"Are you certain?"
He ended the call.
Gabriel immediately knew something was wrong.
"What happened?"
Bennett looked at him.
"We just received another witness."
"I thought Harold was the only one."
"So did I."
The detective slid a business card across the desk.
Printed beneath the company logo were the words:
Metro News Network
"The cameraman covering the courthouse that day just reviewed his footage."
Gabriel picked up the card.
"He says..."
Bennett paused.
"...his camera captured something no one else noticed."
"What?"
Bennett looked him straight in the eye.
May you like
"Before Vanessa pushed Olivia..."
"Nathan smiled."
