Chapter One — The Fall

The first thing Olivia Carter felt was silence.

Not pain.

Not fear.

Silence.

For one impossible second, as her body rolled down the courthouse stairs, everything around her disappeared.

The shouting.

The traffic.

The cameras waiting outside the county courthouse.

Everything became strangely quiet.

Then her shoulder slammed against another marble step.

Pain exploded through her ribs.

Another impact crushed the side of her hip.

Her head struck the edge of a stair before the world blurred into flashes of white sunlight and gray stone.

Her hands instinctively wrapped around her stomach.

Please...

Please let my baby live.

She couldn't remember how many steps remained.

Only that each one felt harder than the last.

By the time her body finally stopped moving, she lay twisted across the sidewalk below the courthouse.

Blood slowly spread beneath her temple.

A terrified woman screamed.

"Oh my God! Somebody call 911!"

People rushed toward her from every direction.

Some froze in horror.

Others lifted their phones, recording before helping.

No one noticed the man still standing at the very top of the staircase.

Nathan Carter.

Olivia's husband.

His expensive navy suit looked untouched.

His polished shoes never moved.

He simply stared downward.

Beside him stood Vanessa Brooks.

Perfect makeup.

Designer heels.

Diamond earrings sparkling beneath the afternoon sun.

She covered her mouth with both hands.

"Oh my God..."

Her performance was flawless.

"It was an accident!"

She looked toward everyone gathering below.

"She slipped!"

Nathan said nothing.

His silence was louder than any confession.

Halfway down the staircase, a tiny crimson stain marked the marble where Olivia's hand had scraped desperately for the railing.

No one noticed it.

Except one witness.

An elderly janitor pushing a cleaning cart beside the courthouse entrance.

His weathered eyes narrowed.

He had seen the entire thing.

Not every detail.

But enough.

Enough to know Olivia had never slipped.

Enough to know another pair of hands had shoved her.

His fingers tightened around the broom handle.

He quietly reached inside his pocket and pressed the emergency recording button on the security radio clipped to his belt.

At the bottom of the stairs, Olivia struggled to breathe.

Every inhale burned.

Her vision faded in and out.

Somewhere above, she heard Vanessa crying loudly.

"It wasn't my fault!"

Someone shouted back.

"Stay where you are!"

Another voice yelled for an ambulance.

Olivia tried lifting her head.

She couldn't.

Warm blood trickled beside her ear.

Her fingers searched weakly for the movement inside her stomach.

Nothing.

Panic consumed her.

"No..."

The word barely escaped her lips.

A woman knelt beside her.

"Don't move, sweetheart."

"My baby..."

Olivia whispered.

"My baby..."

The stranger squeezed her hand.

"They're coming."

But Olivia could already feel darkness creeping closer.

Across the crowded plaza, a black SUV stopped so abruptly that tires screeched against the pavement.

The driver's door flew open.

A tall man stepped out.

Nearly six-foot-four.

Broad shoulders.

Silver beginning to thread through dark hair.

His charcoal suit carried no visible insignia, yet every movement radiated quiet authority.

People instinctively moved aside as he crossed the street.

He reached Olivia within seconds.

Then he froze.

His face changed.

Recognition.

Shock.

Disbelief.

"...Olivia?"

He dropped to one knee.

Carefully supporting her neck, he removed his tailored jacket and folded it beneath her head.

His eyes searched her bruised face.

"No..."

His voice cracked.

"No, no..."

He looked toward the staircase.

Toward Nathan.

Toward Vanessa.

His expression hardened into something terrifying.

"What happened here?"

Vanessa hurried halfway down the stairs.

"It was an accident."

Nathan finally descended several steps.

His face remained strangely calm.

"My wife lost her balance."

The stranger slowly stood.

He was taller than Nathan by several inches.

His gaze never left Nathan's eyes.

"You watched."

Nathan frowned.

"What?"

"You watched her fall."

The plaza became strangely quiet.

Even the people recording lowered their phones.

Nathan forced a laugh.

"You don't even know us."

The stranger stepped closer.

"No."

"I know her."

Olivia's eyes fluttered open.

For a brief second she recognized the man standing above her.

"...Gabriel..."

His jaw tightened.

"I'm here."

"You'll be okay."

Nathan's confidence disappeared.

Vanessa looked between them.

"Who are you?"

The man ignored her.

Instead, he reached inside his wallet.

Pulled out a worn photograph.

One side had faded from years of folding.

It showed two teenagers standing beside an old pickup truck.

One was Olivia.

The other was him.

Twenty years younger.

He quietly slipped the picture back into his wallet.

Then looked directly at Nathan.

"My name is Gabriel Hayes."

The name struck several people nearby immediately.

One reporter gasped.

"Wait..."

"The federal prosecutor?"

Another whispered.

"The one who took down the Morrison corruption case?"

Nathan's face lost all color.

Vanessa suddenly realized why the reporters had gone silent.

Gabriel Hayes wasn't simply a lawyer.

He was the state's most feared special prosecutor.

And he had just recognized the woman bleeding on the sidewalk.

The distant sirens finally reached the courthouse.

Two police cruisers arrived first.

Then the ambulance.

Paramedics rushed toward Olivia.

Gabriel refused to leave her side until they carefully lifted her onto a stretcher.

One medic asked,

"Family?"

Nathan immediately answered.

"I'm her husband."

Gabriel looked directly at the paramedic.

"I'm coming too."

Nathan snapped,

"That's unnecessary."

Gabriel slowly turned toward him.

"No."

"What's unnecessary..."

His voice became ice cold.

"...is pretending this was an accident."

At that exact moment, the elderly courthouse janitor quietly raised one trembling hand.

"I saw her."

Everyone turned toward him.

The old man pointed toward Vanessa.

"She pushed the pregnant lady."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

Nathan's heartbeat pounded inside his ears.

Because for the first time that afternoon...

their perfect lie had begun to collapse.
