Chapter 8 — The Truth David Carter Buried

Victor Langford stayed frozen in his office long after the call ended.

The city lights outside his window continued shining.

Cars moved through the streets.

People lived their ordinary lives.

But inside Langford Tower, everything had changed.

Because Victor had finally realized something.

He was not controlling this story anymore.

He was inside it.

And he did not know how it would end.

“Find David Carter.”

Victor’s voice was cold.

His security director looked up.

“Immediately?”

“Yes.”

“Do you want us to bring him in?”

Victor paused.

“No.”

He looked toward the window.

“Not yet.”

The security director waited.

Victor continued:

“I want everything.”

“Everything?”

“Where he has been. Who he contacted. What he knows. What he’s hiding.”

A pause.

“And most importantly…”

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

“Why he’s afraid.”

Across the city, David Carter sat alone in a small apartment.

The man who once lived in luxury now lived surrounded by silence.

No assistants.

No drivers.

No expensive suits.

No people pretending to respect him.

Only memories.

He stared at an old photograph.

A picture of Amelia.

Before everything fell apart.

She was smiling.

Confident.

Happy.

The woman he had destroyed.

A knock came at the door.

David immediately stood.

His face became tense.

He approached slowly.

“Who is it?”

A woman’s voice answered.

“Someone who knows the truth.”

David froze.

Because he knew that voice.

He opened the door.

And his expression changed.

“Rebecca.”

Amelia’s mother stood outside.

Older.

Calmer.

But still carrying the same authority that had built an empire.

“You knew I would find you eventually,” Rebecca said.

David looked away.

“I didn’t want this.”

Rebecca stepped inside.

“No.”

Her voice was quiet.

“You wanted to run.”

David said nothing.

“You let my daughter carry the blame.”

“I was scared.”

Rebecca’s expression hardened.

“Everyone is scared when they are caught.”

David looked down.

“I made a mistake.”

“A mistake?”

Rebecca stared at him.

“You almost destroyed her entire life.”

David closed his eyes.

Because he knew she was right.

Three years earlier.

Amelia had discovered irregularities in Carter Global’s financial records.

At first, she believed it was an accounting problem.

A mistake.

A misunderstanding.

Until she found the evidence.

Millions of dollars transferred through hidden accounts.

Private contracts.

Fake companies.

And one signature.

David Carter.

Her husband.

The man she trusted more than anyone.

When Amelia confronted him, she expected an explanation.

An apology.

A reason.

Instead…

David begged.

“Please understand.”

Amelia remembered that moment.

Not because of his betrayal.

Because of his fear.

“You did this,” she had whispered.

David cried.

“I never wanted it to go this far.”

That was the sentence that destroyed her.

Not denial.

Not anger.

Regret.

Because he knew.

Back in the apartment, Rebecca looked at David.

“Why did you contact Victor?”

David sat down.

“Because I thought he could protect me.”

Rebecca laughed softly.

“Victor Langford?”

“He has power.”

“No.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“He only has influence.”

She leaned closer.

“People like Victor believe power means making others afraid.”

David looked at her.

“But you?”

Rebecca’s expression changed.

“Real power is being willing to lose everything for the truth.”

David looked away.

“I never meant to hurt Amelia.”

Rebecca answered immediately.

“But you did.”

Silence.

Then David whispered:

“There is something you don’t know.”

Rebecca waited.

“The money.”

“What about it?”

“It wasn’t for me.”

Rebecca frowned.

“Explain.”

David hesitated.

Then opened a drawer.

Inside was a folder.

Old.

Damaged.

Important.

“I found out where the money was really going.”

Rebecca took the folder.

Her eyes moved across the pages.

Slowly…

Her expression changed.

Because the documents revealed something impossible.

A hidden network.

A group of investors.

A secret organization that had been manipulating companies for years.

And one name appeared repeatedly.

A name Rebecca recognized.

“No…”

David looked at her.

“You know them?”

Rebecca slowly lowered the folder.

“Yes.”

Her voice became quiet.

“Everyone knows them.”

“Who are they?”

Rebecca looked at the documents again.

“The people who thought they owned the world.”

Meanwhile, Amelia watched Victor’s public attack unfold.

Her legal team was concerned.

“The media is questioning everything.”

Amelia nodded.

“I expected that.”

Eleanor looked surprised.

“You expected this?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Amelia looked at the screen showing Victor’s statement.

“Because people like Victor follow a pattern.”

“What pattern?”

“They attack when they feel cornered.”

Eleanor studied her.

“You sound like you know him well.”

Amelia was silent.

Because she did.

Not personally.

But she understood him.

Victor was not fighting because he believed he was right.

He was fighting because he was afraid.

That night, Amelia received an unexpected visitor.

David.

The moment she opened the door, everything stopped.

Three years of pain.

Three years of anger.

Three years of unanswered questions.

Lily was asleep upstairs.

Amelia stepped outside and closed the door behind her.

“What do you want?”

David looked broken.

“I need to tell you the truth.”

Amelia laughed bitterly.

“The truth?”

“Yes.”

“You had three years.”

David lowered his eyes.

“I know.”

“Three years while everyone thought I failed.”

“I know.”

“Three years while Lily heard people say things about her mother.”

David’s eyes filled with regret.

“I know.”

Amelia’s voice became colder.

“Then why are you here?”

David looked at her.

“Because Victor Langford is not your biggest problem.”

A long silence.

Amelia stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

David handed her the folder.

“You need to see this.”

She opened it.

Read the first page.

Then the second.

Her face slowly changed.

Because she recognized the names.

The companies.

The signatures.

The people involved.

People she trusted.

People who had been watching her for years.

David whispered:

“I didn’t destroy your company alone.”

Amelia looked up.

“Who helped you?”

David swallowed.

Then said:

“The same people who are now using Victor.”

The wind moved through the street.

Everything went quiet.

Amelia held the folder tightly.

Because suddenly, Victor Langford was no longer the enemy standing in front of her.

He was only a piece on a much bigger chessboard.

And somewhere in the shadows…

May you like

someone far more powerful had been waiting.

Waiting for Amelia Carter to return.
