Chapter 13 — The Last Person She Trusted

The abandoned warehouse was silent.

Too silent.

Amelia Carter stood in the middle of the empty space, staring at the two people in front of her.

Claire Whitmore.

David Carter.

Two names that once meant safety.

Two people who once stood beside her.

And now…

Two people connected to the destruction of everything she built.

But there was something different tonight.

Something Amelia could feel.

They were not there to threaten her.

They were there because the truth was finally ready to come out.

Claire walked slowly across the dusty floor.

“You always believed the world was simple.”

Amelia’s eyes stayed on her.

“No.”

Claire smiled.

“Yes, you did.”

“You believed there were good people and bad people.”

A pause.

“You believed hard work was rewarded.”

Another step.

“You believed loyalty meant something.”

Amelia’s expression hardened.

“And you spent years proving me wrong?”

Claire looked away.

“I spent years surviving.”

“By destroying me?”

Claire’s voice became colder.

“By refusing to disappear.”

David remained silent.

Amelia noticed.

“You knew.”

David looked down.

“Amelia…”

“No.”

Her voice cut through the room.

“Don’t say my name like you still have the right.”

David closed his eyes.

Because he knew he deserved that.

Claire stopped in front of her.

“You want to know who betrayed you?”

Amelia said nothing.

Claire turned toward David.

“Tell her.”

David remained still.

“Tell her what really happened.”

Amelia looked at him.

For years, she had wanted answers.

Now that moment had arrived.

But somehow…

She felt more afraid than before.

David finally spoke.

“I didn’t start the betrayal.”

Amelia waited.

“I was trying to stop it.”

She frowned.

“What?”

David looked at her.

“The first person who discovered The Meridian Circle was you.”

Amelia froze.

“What are you talking about?”

“You found their financial patterns before anyone else.”

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

David shook his head.

“You were smarter than they expected.”

Amelia remembered.

Years ago, she had noticed unusual transactions.

Companies buying companies.

Investors moving money.

Executives changing positions.

She thought it was random.

She was wrong.

“It wasn’t about stealing Carter Global,” David continued.

“It was about using Carter Global as a gateway.”

Amelia stared.

“To what?”

David answered:

“Control.”

Claire walked toward an old table.

On it was a small box.

She opened it.

Inside were documents.

Original documents.

Amelia immediately recognized them.

Her company’s first agreements.

Her first contracts.

Her first investor meetings.

“How did you get those?”

Claire smiled.

“Because I was there.”

The answer hurt.

Because it reminded Amelia of something.

Claire had been there from the beginning.

She knew everything.

Every weakness.

Every plan.

Every dream.

“You were never my partner.”

Claire looked at her.

“I was.”

A pause.

“But I was never satisfied being second.”

David finally stepped forward.

“There is something else you need to know.”

Amelia looked at him.

“What?”

“Your father.”

The room changed.

Amelia’s face became serious.

“Don’t talk about my father.”

David swallowed.

“He knew about them.”

Silence.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“My father died before any of this happened.”

David shook his head.

“No.”

Amelia stared.

“He spent years investigating them.”

Claire added:

“And that is why they wanted him gone.”

The words felt impossible.

Amelia stepped back.

“You’re lying.”

David looked at her.

“I wish I was.”

Suddenly, everything connected.

Her father’s strange warnings.

The missing documents.

The unexplained business failures.

The people who disappeared from their lives.

She had always thought those were separate events.

They weren’t.

They were pieces of the same story.

“The Meridian Circle…”

Amelia whispered.

“They have been around for decades.”

Claire nodded.

“And your father got too close.”

Amelia looked at Claire.

“Then why?”

Claire’s expression changed.

“Why what?”

“Why did you help them?”

For the first time, Claire looked uncomfortable.

The confidence disappeared.

Because that question was different.

Not about business.

Not about power.

About friendship.

“I didn’t start with them.”

Amelia waited.

“I started because I wanted to prove myself.”

Claire looked down.

“I wanted to be recognized.”

A bitter smile appeared.

“And they noticed.”

“They told me I was special.”

Amelia understood.

They had not controlled Claire through fear.

They controlled her through validation.

Through making her feel important.

“They gave you what you wanted.”

Claire looked at her.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Power.”

Silence.

“And then?”

Claire’s voice became quiet.

“Then I realized power was addictive.”

David looked at Amelia.

“I tried to fix it.”

Amelia laughed softly.

“You helped destroy my life.”

“I know.”

“You let people think I failed.”

“I know.”

“You let Lily grow up hearing rumors about her mother.”

David lowered his head.

“I know.”

Amelia looked away.

Because anger was easier.

Anger was cleaner.

But disappointment was heavier.

Then suddenly…

The warehouse lights turned on.

Everyone froze.

A slow clap echoed through the building.

Someone stepped out from the shadows.

A man.

Older.

Calm.

Confident.

Someone Amelia had never met.

But Claire and David immediately looked afraid.

The man smiled.

“Very emotional.”

Amelia turned.

“Who are you?”

The man adjusted his coat.

“My name is Alexander Vale.”

The name meant nothing to Amelia.

But it meant everything to the others.

Claire went pale.

“Why are you here?”

Alexander smiled.

“Because this conversation was becoming boring.”

David stepped forward.

“You said we were finished.”

“I changed my mind.”

Alexander looked at Amelia.

“After all…”

He smiled.

“You are the reason this entire operation existed.”

Amelia froze.

“What?”

Alexander walked closer.

“You still don’t understand, do you?”

The warehouse became silent.

“You think your company was the target.”

A pause.

“You think your money was the target.”

Another pause.

“No.”

He looked directly at her.

“You were the target.”

Amelia felt cold.

“Why?”

Alexander smiled.

“Because your father found something.”

“What?”

“The one thing The Meridian Circle fears.”

He leaned closer.

“Proof.”

A long silence.

Then Alexander said:

“And unfortunately for us…”

His smile disappeared.

“You inherited it.”

Amelia’s heart raced.

Proof.

Her father’s proof.

Something hidden for years.

Something powerful enough to threaten an organization that controlled governments and corporations.

Alexander turned away.

“Now the question is…”

He looked back at her.

“Will you find it before we do?”

The warehouse doors suddenly opened.

Security teams entered.

Amelia realized too late.

The meeting was never about answers.

It was about finding out what she knew.

Alexander smiled.

“Welcome back to the real world, Amelia Carter.”

And as she was surrounded…

Amelia finally understood.

The gallery incident.

Victor.

David.

Claire.

Everything.

It was all connected.

May you like

And the biggest secret of all…

was hidden inside her own past.
