Chapter 12 — The Betrayal Inside the Family

The photograph remained on the floor for several minutes.
Amelia could not move.
Could not breathe.
Could not understand what she was seeing.
Because the woman standing beside David Carter in that picture…
was her mother.
Rebecca Carter.
The same woman who had comforted her.
The same woman who had told her to fight.
The same woman who had promised she would always protect her.
Amelia slowly picked up the photograph.
Her hands were shaking.
“No…”
The word escaped her lips like a whisper.
“No, that’s impossible.”
But the image did not disappear.
The truth did not change.
The past did not rewrite itself.
That night, Amelia waited.
She didn’t call Rebecca.
She didn’t confront her.
Not yet.
Because anger was easy.
Pain was easy.
But understanding was harder.
And after everything she had learned, Amelia knew one thing:
There were always two versions of every story.
The version people showed the world.
And the version they desperately tried to hide.
The next morning, Rebecca arrived at Amelia’s house.
She knew.
Of course she knew.
Mothers always knew when something changed.
Especially when it involved their children.
Rebecca stepped inside.
“Amelia.”
Her daughter stood silently near the window.
The photograph was on the table.
Rebecca saw it.
And stopped.
For the first time in years…
Rebecca Carter looked afraid.
“You found it.”
Amelia turned slowly.
“So it’s real.”
Rebecca didn’t answer.
That silence was enough.
Amelia laughed quietly.
A broken laugh.
“I defended you.”
Rebecca closed her eyes.
“Amelia…”
“I defended you when everyone blamed you.”
Her voice grew stronger.
“I believed you when you said you wanted to protect me.”
Rebecca looked down.
“I did want to protect you.”
“Then explain this.”
Amelia pushed the photograph forward.
“Explain why you were with David the night my company collapsed.”
The room became silent.
Rebecca sat down.
And for the first time in years…
she looked old.
Not weak.
Not powerless.
Just tired.
“There are things you don’t know.”
Amelia stared at her.
“That’s what everyone says.”
A pause.
“David said it.”
“Claire said it.”
“Victor said it.”
Her eyes filled with disappointment.
“And now you.”
Rebecca whispered:
“I was trying to save you.”
Amelia shook her head.
“No.”
“You don’t understand.”
“Then make me understand.”
Rebecca looked at the photograph.
“That night, David came to me because he was terrified.”
“Terrified of what?”
Rebecca hesitated.
“The Meridian Circle.”
Amelia froze.
“What?”
“He was already trapped.”
Rebecca continued.
“Claire had been working with them for years.”
Amelia’s anger softened slightly.
“She manipulated him.”
“Yes.”
Rebecca nodded.
“But not only him.”
“What do you mean?”
Rebecca looked at her daughter.
“They threatened Lily.”
Everything stopped.
Amelia felt the room disappear.
“What?”
Rebecca’s voice broke.
“They knew about your daughter. They knew where you lived. They knew your routines.”
Amelia stepped back.
“No…”
“I did what I had to do.”
“You met with David.”
“I tried to get information.”
“You lied to me.”
Rebecca looked at her.
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
The words hurt.
Because they sounded like the truth.
Three years earlier.
Rebecca remembered the night clearly.
David arrived at her house after midnight.
His face was pale.
His hands were shaking.
“They know.”
Rebecca looked at him.
“Who?”
“The Meridian Circle.”
The name alone made her blood run cold.
“They know Amelia found out.”
Rebecca immediately understood.
“What do they want?”
David laughed bitterly.
“What do you think?”
Her daughter’s company.
Her daughter’s influence.
Her daughter’s future.
But then David said something worse.
“They know about Lily.”
Rebecca froze.
Back in the present, Amelia sat down.
The anger was still there.
But now it was mixed with something else.
Pain.
“You should have told me.”
Rebecca nodded.
“I know.”
“You should have trusted me.”
“I was afraid.”
Amelia looked at her.
“You were afraid?”
Rebecca’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“Because I had already lost one child.”
The words shocked Amelia.
Rebecca rarely spoke about the past.
“My father…”
Rebecca nodded.
“Your grandfather.”
She looked away.
“He challenged powerful people once.”
“And?”
“They destroyed him.”
Silence.
“I spent my entire life trying to make sure the same thing never happened to you.”
Amelia’s expression softened.
But only slightly.
“Mom…”
Rebecca whispered:
“I made one mistake.”
“What?”
“I thought protecting you meant making decisions for you.”
The honesty hurt.
Because it was exactly what Amelia feared.
Everyone around her kept saying they were protecting her.
But they never allowed her to choose.
That afternoon, Amelia met Victor.
He immediately noticed something was wrong.
“What happened?”
Amelia placed the photograph on the table.
Victor looked at it.
His expression changed.
“Where did you get this?”
“Someone sent it.”
Victor studied the image.
“Rebecca knew.”
“Yes.”
“She was trying to help.”
Amelia looked at him sharply.
“Don’t defend her.”
Victor paused.
Because he understood.
This wasn’t about logic.
It was about betrayal.
“She hid the truth.”
“Yes.”
“But she didn’t betray you.”
Amelia looked at him.
“You don’t know that.”
Victor leaned back.
“Maybe.”
A pause.
“But I know something about powerful enemies.”
“What?”
“They don’t just attack from outside.”
Amelia said nothing.
“They make you question the people closest to you.”
The words stayed with her.
Because that was exactly what was happening.
That evening, another message arrived.
This time from Claire.
Only one sentence:
“Now you finally understand why nobody around you is innocent.”
Amelia stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
A location.
And a time.
Tomorrow. Midnight. Come alone.
Rebecca saw the message.
“No.”
Amelia looked at her.
“I have to go.”
“It’s a trap.”
“Yes.”
“Then why?”
Amelia looked toward Lily’s bedroom.
Because she finally understood something.
Claire wanted her afraid.
She wanted her isolated.
She wanted her to believe everyone had betrayed her.
But Amelia was done running.
“I need to know the truth.”
Rebecca reached for her hand.
“Amelia…”
Her daughter looked at her.
For the first time in years, there was no anger.
Only exhaustion.
“I need to know who I can trust.”
At midnight, Amelia arrived at the abandoned warehouse.
The same place where Carter Global’s first major deal had been signed years ago.
A place filled with memories.
A place chosen carefully.
Claire was waiting.
But she was not alone.
Someone stood beside her.
Someone Amelia recognized immediately.
Someone she never expected to see again.
David Carter.
Claire smiled.
“Welcome back, Amelia.”
Amelia stared at them.
“What is this?”
Claire stepped forward.
“The truth.”
David looked away.
And then Claire said the words that changed everything:
“Your mother was not the only person who lied to you.”
Amelia’s heart sank.
“Who else?”
Claire smiled.
“The person you trusted with your entire empire.”
A pause.
“The person who taught me everything I know.”
Amelia looked at David.
Then at Claire.
And suddenly she realized…
May you like
The betrayal was deeper than she imagined.
Much deeper.
