Chapter 11 — The Friend Who Became the Enemy

Amelia Carter spent the entire night staring at the ceiling.

Sleep never came.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Claire.

Not the woman from the television.

Not the person who had just threatened her.

The Claire from years ago.

The girl who sat beside her in college cafeterias.

The woman who helped her prepare the first business plan for Carter Global.

The friend who promised:

“Whatever happens, I’ll always stand beside you.”

And Amelia believed her.

That was the part that hurt the most.

Not the betrayal.

The trust that came before it.

The next morning, Amelia arrived at Carter Global early.

She needed answers.

Not rumors.

Not theories.

Proof.

Eleanor Hayes was already waiting inside the conference room with several files.

“You didn’t sleep.”

It wasn’t a question.

Amelia placed her bag down.

“Neither did you.”

Eleanor smiled slightly.

“Lawyers rarely sleep when billion-dollar conspiracies appear overnight.”

Amelia looked at the documents.

“What did you find?”

Eleanor opened the first file.

“Claire Whitmore has been involved with multiple acquisitions over the last decade.”

Amelia frowned.

“Acquisitions?”

“Yes.”

“Through legitimate companies?”

“That’s what everyone believed.”

Eleanor placed another document on the table.

“But the money trail tells a different story.”

Amelia read carefully.

Several companies.

Several investors.

All connected through hidden accounts.

All leading back to one organization.

The Meridian Circle.

“She wasn’t just helping them.”

Eleanor nodded.

“She was leading operations.”

Amelia leaned back.

A painful realization settled in.

Claire had not accidentally become powerful.

She had planned it.

Step by step.

Year after year.

Across the city, Claire Whitmore sat in a luxurious office overlooking Manhattan.

The room was elegant.

Minimal.

Perfect.

Just like her.

Her assistant placed a folder on the desk.

“Everything is ready.”

Claire opened it.

A photograph of Amelia and Lily was inside.

She stared at it.

For a moment, something almost human appeared in her expression.

Regret.

Then it disappeared.

“Has Amelia contacted the media?”

“No.”

“Good.”

The assistant hesitated.

“Are you sure this is necessary?”

Claire looked up.

The question surprised her.

“Necessary?”

“Yes.”

The assistant carefully chose her words.

“After everything… do you really want to destroy her?”

Claire looked back at the photograph.

“I’m not destroying her.”

“Then what are you doing?”

Claire closed the folder.

“I’m finishing what she started.”

That afternoon, Amelia received an unexpected invitation.

A private meeting.

From Claire.

No lawyers.

No cameras.

No witnesses.

Just the two of them.

Eleanor immediately objected.

“Absolutely not.”

Amelia looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because people like Claire don’t invite someone somewhere to talk.”

“What do they do?”

“They create situations.”

Amelia understood.

A trap.

But she also knew something else.

Avoiding Claire would not solve anything.

“I need to hear her.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“You already know what she did.”

“No.”

Amelia looked toward the window.

“I know what she did.”

A pause.

“But I don’t know why.”

The meeting took place at an old private club outside the city.

A place filled with memories.

Because Amelia and Claire used to come here after business victories.

They celebrated here.

They dreamed here.

Now they sat across from each other like strangers.

Claire smiled first.

“You look good.”

Amelia’s expression remained cold.

“You look exactly the same.”

Claire laughed softly.

“Is that an insult?”

“No.”

Amelia looked at her.

“It’s an observation.”

Silence.

For a few seconds, neither woman spoke.

Then Claire sighed.

“I knew this day would come.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

“When did you start planning against me?”

Claire looked down.

“That’s not the right question.”

“Then what is?”

Claire looked up.

“The right question is why I had to.”

Amelia felt anger rising.

“You had to?”

Claire nodded.

“You had everything.”

The words were quiet.

But dangerous.

“Everything?”

Claire smiled sadly.

“Everyone loved you.”

Amelia stared at her.

“You were my best friend.”

“And that was the problem.”

The answer shocked her.

Claire continued:

“You never saw me.”

“That’s not true.”

“It is.”

Claire leaned forward.

“You saw me as someone who supported you.”

A pause.

“Someone who helped you.”

Another pause.

“But you never saw me as someone who could lead.”

Amelia understood.

This was not about money.

Not entirely.

It was about resentment.

Years of it.

“You were jealous.”

Claire’s expression hardened.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I was tired.”

“Tired of what?”

“Watching you receive everything.”

Amelia stared.

“I worked for everything I had.”

Claire laughed quietly.

“And I worked beside you.”

The room became silent.

“I was there before Carter Global became famous.”

“I know.”

“I sacrificed just as much.”

“I know.”

“But when people talked about the company…”

Claire pointed at Amelia.

“They said your name.”

Amelia’s voice softened.

“Claire…”

“No.”

Claire interrupted.

“Don’t pretend you understand.”

The bitterness in her voice finally appeared.

“For years, I stood in your shadow.”

Amelia looked at the woman she once loved like family.

“And you decided to destroy me?”

Claire’s face changed.

“I decided to take what should have been mine.”

Amelia stood.

“I came here hoping there was still a part of you that regretted this.”

Claire looked away.

For a second…

Amelia saw something.

Pain.

But it vanished.

“I’m sorry you feel that way.”

Those words hurt more than anger.

Because they proved Claire had already chosen.

Before Amelia left, Claire said:

“One more thing.”

Amelia stopped.

“You think you know the whole story.”

She turned.

“What does that mean?”

Claire smiled.

“It means David Carter was not the only person who betrayed you.”

Amelia froze.

Claire continued:

“There was someone else.”

“Who?”

Claire looked directly into her eyes.

“Someone you trusted more than me.”

Amelia felt a chill.

“Who?”

Claire only smiled.

“You’ll find out soon.”

That evening, Amelia returned home.

She found an envelope waiting outside her door.

No name.

No address.

Only three words written on the front.

THE FINAL TRUTH

Her hands tightened.

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph taken three years ago.

The night everything collapsed.

Amelia stared.

Because standing beside David Carter in the picture…

was someone she never expected.

Someone she believed would protect her forever.

Her own mother.

Rebecca Carter.

Amelia dropped the photograph.

For the first time in years…

she felt truly afraid.

Because maybe the greatest betrayal…

May you like

was not from her enemy.

Maybe it came from the person who loved her most.
