Chapter 7: The Last Secret

One year later, Sophie no longer woke up screaming.

The nightmares had faded.

The scar near her hairline was hidden beneath longer hair, but Evelyn knew it would always be there—a reminder that some wounds healed without ever disappearing.

Life had become wonderfully ordinary.

Sophie was back in school.

She laughed again.

She painted pictures filled with bright skies instead of dark storms.

For the first time in years, Evelyn believed they were finally free.

Then her phone rang.

"Ms. Hale?"

"This is Attorney Benjamin Lawson."

"I represent your late grandmother's estate."

Evelyn frowned.

"My grandmother passed away eleven years ago."

"Yes."

"But we recently discovered a sealed document that was never delivered."

Her heart skipped.

"There appears to have been... interference."

Two days later...

Evelyn walked into Lawson & Pierce Law Offices overlooking downtown Chicago.

Attorney Lawson placed a weathered envelope on the conference table.

The handwriting immediately caught her attention.

She recognized it.

Her grandmother.

Margaret Hale.

The envelope had never been opened.

"It was hidden inside a false wall during renovations of your grandparents' lake house," Lawson explained.

"It should have reached you after your grandmother's funeral."

Evelyn carefully unfolded the letter.

The ink had faded slightly.

But every word remained perfectly clear.

My dearest Evelyn,

If you're reading this, someone prevented this letter from reaching you.

Her hands began trembling.

Never doubt yourself.

Never let anyone convince you that you deserve less because you're quieter than they are.

Tears slowly rolled down her face.

Then came the paragraph that changed everything.

Your grandfather always intended for his publishing company to belong to you.

Not Richard.

Not Preston.

You.

Evelyn stopped breathing.

Attorney Lawson quietly slid another folder across the table.

"We verified everything."

"There are signed corporate records."

"Your grandfather legally transferred controlling shares into a trust for you."

"But after his death..."

Lawson hesitated.

"Someone forged several probate documents."

Evelyn already knew the answer.

"My father."

Lawson nodded.

"The signatures match the same handwriting experts used during Preston's criminal trial."

For over thirty years...

Richard Whitmore hadn't simply favored his son.

He had stolen his daughter's inheritance.

That evening, Richard received another knock at the Whitmore estate.

This time...

it wasn't the police.

It was a federal investigator.

"Richard Whitmore?"

"Yes."

"You are being formally notified that the United States Attorney's Office has opened an investigation into suspected inheritance fraud, forgery, tax evasion, and obstruction of probate proceedings."

Richard's face lost every trace of color.

"You've got the wrong man."

The investigator calmly handed him a copy of Margaret Hale's original letter.

"We don't believe we do."

For the second time in two years...

Richard realized the past wasn't finished with him.

Some secrets survived decades.

May you like

But eventually...

the truth always found daylight.
