Chapter 4: A Mother's Choice

Chicago General Hospital was unusually quiet after midnight.
Sophie slept peacefully beneath a warm blanket, her small hand wrapped around Evelyn's finger.
The monitors beeped steadily.
The doctors expected a full recovery.
Physically.
Emotionally...
they weren't so certain.
A soft knock interrupted the silence.
Evelyn looked up.
Her parents stood outside the hospital room.
Caroline's expensive makeup had been ruined by tears.
Richard looked twenty years older.
Neither crossed the doorway.
"We came to see Sophie," Caroline whispered.
Evelyn stood.
"No."
Her mother blinked.
"What?"
"You don't get to see her."
Richard cleared his throat.
"Evelyn..."
"We made mistakes."
"You watched your son assault your granddaughter."
Evelyn's voice remained calm.
"You called it a misunderstanding."
"You told me to leave."
"You told my bleeding child she ruined a wedding."
Neither parent answered.
"We're still family," Richard finally muttered.
Evelyn almost smiled.
"No."
"We only shared blood."
"Family would've protected Sophie."
Those words landed harder than any scream.
Caroline began crying openly.
"I never thought Preston would actually hurt her."
"But you watched him blame her."
"You watched him humiliate her."
"You watched him swing that board."
"And you defended him."
Silence.
Long...
painful...
unavoidable.
Finally Evelyn stepped toward the doorway.
"If you ever want forgiveness..."
"...start by telling the police exactly how long you've covered for Preston."
Richard lowered his head.
Caroline couldn't stop sobbing.
Without another word...
they turned and walked away.
Neither realized...
it would be the last time their daughter willingly looked at them.
Inside the room...
Sophie slowly opened her eyes.
"Mommy?"
Evelyn smiled gently.
"I'm here."
"Did I do something bad?"
Evelyn leaned down and kissed her forehead.
"No, sweetheart."
"You told the truth."
May you like
"And from now on..."
"...that's the only thing that matters."
