Chapter 1: Blood on the Menu

The sirens reached the hotel just as the first wedding guest found the courage to breathe again.
Their distant wail echoed through the grand ballroom, cutting across the stunned silence like a knife. The violinists had lowered their instruments. Champagne glasses remained frozen halfway to waiting lips. No one spoke.
Evelyn Hale knelt on the marble floor with eight-year-old Sophie cradled against her chest.
Warm blood seeped through the white ribbon around Sophie's neck and stained Evelyn's pale blue evening gown.
"Stay with me, sweetheart," Evelyn whispered, brushing trembling strands of hair away from Sophie's face. "Mommy's here."
Sophie's eyelids fluttered.
"I... didn't steal it..."
"I know," Evelyn said, her voice steady despite the storm raging inside her. "I know exactly who did."
Across the ballroom, Preston Whitmore stood beside his bride, trying to regain control.
"It was an accident," he declared loudly. "She charged at me while I was protecting my wedding."
The lie came effortlessly.
His new wife, Vanessa, slipped her arm through his.
"Everyone saw the phone in her pocket," she added. "We're the victims here."
Several guests nodded uneasily.
Others avoided looking at the injured child entirely.
Then hotel security entered.
The lead officer, Marcus Reed, immediately crouched beside Evelyn.
"We've already called an ambulance," he said calmly. "Can you tell me exactly what happened?"
Before Evelyn could answer, Preston stepped forward.
"The little girl stole my phone," he interrupted. "Her mother became violent when I confronted them."
Marcus didn't even look at him.
His attention remained on Sophie.
Then his eyes drifted toward the heavy oak menu board lying on the marble floor.
Fresh blood coated one corner.
He slowly lifted it with gloved hands.
"This weighs nearly fifteen pounds," he murmured.
The room grew quieter.
"You struck a child with this?"
Preston folded his arms.
"I reacted."
"It wasn't intentional."
Marcus looked directly at him.
"My body camera is recording, sir."
Preston's confidence flickered for the first time.
Meanwhile, paramedics rushed inside carrying a stretcher.
One medic carefully examined Sophie's head wound.
"We need to transport her now."
"Possible concussion."
"Keep her awake."
As they lifted Sophie, the little girl cried softly.
"Mommy..."
"I'm scared."
Evelyn kissed her forehead.
"You don't have to be brave anymore."
"I'm going with you."
As they hurried toward the ballroom doors, Preston called after her.
"You'll regret this!"
Evelyn stopped.
Without turning around, she answered quietly,
"No, Preston."
"You will."
Then she disappeared into the flashing red and blue lights outside.
Behind her, Security Chief Marcus Reed slowly raised his radio.
"Control," he said.
"Lock every exit."
"And nobody leaves this ballroom until I review every second of today's surveillance footage."
