Chapter 3: The Family Name

The Whitmore ballroom had become a crime scene.

Crystal chandeliers still glowed overhead, but the music was gone. Half-finished champagne flutes remained on linen-covered tables as detectives moved methodically through the room, photographing the bloodstained marble and collecting evidence.

Preston Whitmore sat confidently in a private bridal suite with his parents and new wife.

He wasn't worried.

Not yet.

"This is ridiculous," he scoffed, loosening his bow tie. "She's my niece. Nobody's going to arrest me over a family misunderstanding."

His mother, Caroline, gently squeezed his arm.

"Exactly. Evelyn always overreacts."

His father nodded.

"Once people calm down, they'll realize Sophie shouldn't have touched your phone in the first place."

Vanessa poured herself another glass of champagne.

"By tomorrow the headlines will say an unstable single mother ruined our wedding."

The four of them laughed.

Then came three sharp knocks.

The laughter stopped.

Detective Laura Mitchell entered without waiting for permission.

Behind her stood two uniformed officers.

"Mr. Preston Whitmore?"

Preston stood slowly.

"Yes?"

"I need you to come with us."

He smiled confidently.

"My attorney isn't here yet."

"You don't need him for this conversation."

Detective Mitchell placed a tablet on the coffee table.

"We recovered the ballroom surveillance footage."

Preston's smile barely moved.

"So?"

Laura pressed Play.

The room fell silent.

Every face turned toward the screen.

The video clearly showed Preston removing his titanium iPhone from his tuxedo pocket.

Then walking directly behind Sophie's chair.

Then sliding the phone into the little girl's denim jacket.

Vanessa's wineglass slipped from her fingers.

It shattered across the hardwood floor.

"No..." she whispered.

Caroline covered her mouth.

Richard Whitmore stared at his son as if seeing him for the first time.

The video continued.

Preston accusing Sophie.

Guests gasping.

Evelyn pleading.

Then...

the menu board.

Frame by frame.

No accident.

No struggle.

Just Preston raising fifteen pounds of solid oak over his shoulder...

...and smashing it into an eight-year-old child's head.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Detective Mitchell folded her arms.

"Would you like to change your statement?"

Preston's face had turned ghost white.

"I..."

His voice disappeared.

"It wasn't supposed to happen like that."

Laura's expression hardened.

"So you admit you planted the phone?"

His silence answered for him.

She nodded toward the officers.

"Preston Whitmore..."

"...you're under arrest for aggravated battery of a child, filing a false police report, felony evidence tampering, and child abuse."

Cold steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists.

For the first time in thirty-two years...

the Whitmore golden boy looked terrified.
