David’s acting appointment gave him access to corporate accounts.
He immediately transferred emergency reserves into Northfield Family Solutions.
The board believed the payments covered legal and security expenses.
Michael knew they were moving stolen money before regulators froze it.
The company’s independent accountant, Lena Brooks, contacted Michael secretly.
She had worked with Laura years earlier.
Laura once asked her to examine David’s transfers.
Lena found irregularities but was ordered by the board to stop.
“Who ordered you?” Michael asked.
“Your father.”
Michael became still.
His father, Henry Collins, founded the company.
He died seven years earlier.
Henry considered David a second son.
He appointed him as Michael’s partner.
Lena explained that Henry discovered the misuse of Ava’s trust before his death.
He believed exposing David would destroy the business and send hundreds of employees into unemployment.
Henry forced David to repay part of the money privately.
He never reported him.
“Everyone protected the company,” Michael said.
“Laura did too,” Lena replied.
“That is why David kept getting chances.”
The pattern was clear.
Henry protected David.
Laura tried to protect Michael.
Michael tried to protect the company from family conflict.
Every silence allowed the scheme to grow.
Lena gave Michael access to an independent backup server.
It contained unaltered transaction records.
The files proved David used Michael’s signature remotely while Michael was traveling.
They also proved Rachel received payments before meeting Michael at the charity dinner.
The relationship had been planned.
Michael gave the records to federal investigators.
Before they could freeze every account, David transferred twelve million dollars into an offshore bank.
The remaining money stayed locked because Ava’s biological verification was required.
David needed the child physically present to unlock it.
That was why Rachel planned to take her to Switzerland.
Ava remained under hospital protection.
Michael hired independent guards approved by Officer Ruiz.
No one connected to Collins Freight could enter the floor.
Late that night, Baxter began barking outside Ava’s room.
The dog had been returned from the boarding facility.
He scratched at the wall beside the hospital closet.
Ava pointed toward it.
“He does that when he smells David.”
Michael looked at the ventilation grille.
A maintenance worker had entered the floor twenty minutes earlier.
The worker’s identification was fake.
Officer Ruiz opened the service door behind the closet.
A man was moving through the hospital utility passage.
Police stopped him near the elevator.
