Chapter 13 - THE PUBLIC FALL OF COLLINS FREIGHT

Federal investigators froze the stolen accounts.

David was removed as acting chief executive.

The emergency board reinstated Michael.

He declined.

Reporters waited outside the company headquarters.

Employees feared losing their jobs.

Investors demanded reassurance.

Michael stood before them with Laura’s statement in his hand.

“My company was built partly with money stolen from my daughter.”

The room became silent.

“My father knew.”

“My partner committed the theft.”

“My late wife discovered it.”

“I benefited without understanding the source.”

He paused.

“That does not make the benefit clean.”

Michael announced that Ava’s trust would receive ownership equal to every dollar invested from it, including growth.

The transfer gave Ava a controlling interest.

A court-appointed independent trustee would manage it until she became an adult.

Michael also announced a forensic audit and compensation fund.

Several board members resigned.

The company’s value fell sharply.

Some employees blamed Michael for speaking publicly.

Others blamed David.

Michael accepted the anger.

Truth did not become wrong because consequences were expensive.

Lena Brooks became interim chief executive under an independent board.

Michael remained only as an adviser.

He sold his largest home and several private investments to support the company during restructuring.

Ava listened to the announcement from Ruth’s apartment.

“Are we losing our house?” she asked.

“Maybe.”

“Can Baxter come with us?”

“Yes.”

“Then I don’t care.”

Michael smiled sadly.

The large house had not protected her.

Its pantry became a prison.

Its cameras became weapons.

Its locked rooms helped adults hide their plans.

A smaller home might become safer precisely because it carried less power.

Officer Ruiz called after the press conference.

The laboratory had completed testing on the drugs used during Laura’s illness.

The evidence supported criminal charges.

Rachel and David each claimed the other ordered the injections.

A recovered message resolved the dispute.

David wrote,

Keep Laura weak until I recover the journal.

Rachel answered,

And if she does not stop?

May you like

David replied,

Then make sure the cancer receives the blame.
